I have eaten my words...again

Well, anybody who knows me will remember it was a year ago to day and a year ago the 14th that our family lost our beloved dogs, Molly, Daisy, and Link-link.  My daughter has her two still, and my dear Fritz will be 17 in April.  I know that Fritz is on borrowed time now, and had decided I would not fool with any more dogs after he was gone.  I imagined myself dogless for the first time in over 17 years.

So I have adopted a beagle from the animal shelter.  His name is Si [after Duck Dynasty] and is the fattest dog I have ever seen in person.  I mean he is really really fat.  I pick him up after 3:30 this afternoon.  They are taking him for his rabies and are giving him a bath.  I have gone and got some diet food and a leash, collar, and toy for him.  He has been in the shelter since April.  He's around 4 or 5.

I hope I am doing the right thing.  I am excited and feel like I did.

The animal shelter people were so happy he was adopted.  They said nobody ever wants the hunting-type dogs like beagles and such.  I love hounds, and while not a hunter myself, it's something about the sound of them that hits me in my soul.

We have a neighbour who had a beagle, all the people in the neighbourhood tried to get the dog taken from him due to how they cared (or lack there-of) for him. Another neighbour asked him if they'd take $60.00 for Mojo and they said yes. Mojo is the absolute BEST dog our neighbors have ever had & they took him at 4 years old also . They have had to teach him to play and that it was OK for him to leave their side, he doesn't beg at the table, he LOVES to cuddle. The neighbor said he took a dirty shirt of his and put it in mojos bed the first few nights he was there, at the end of a week Mojo was sleeping on the bed with him and his wife (at the foot of the bed).  He is terrified of thunderstorms and needs to be on someone when one passes through. Brice and his wife have 3 kids, a teenager, an autistic 9 year old and a 3 year old. Mojo lets the 3 year old lay on him, tug at him and he does nothing but wag his tail, when he's had enough he walks away and hides in a spot she can't get to. Mojo is FANTASTIC with their 9 year old son. When J has an especially bad day he actually can calm him down just by laying next to him. Mojo is exceptionally gentle with J. I have a feeling you also have a special dog arriving at your home! Enjoy Si!

there is something about beagles and storms! they hate them! those thundershirts may help. congrats on your new beagle!! they are popular dogs around here, and they are smart too.  (beagle brigade anyone?)  I cannot wait to see pics of your new fuzzy guy!

Congrats!!    Beagle are awesome.  I had a Beagle and he was great, my best friend.  The only thing you need to do is somehow reinforce your trash cans cause they will get in them and will try NON STOP!

I didn't think I would ever want another dog either but with the situation and them being related I know it is the right thing to do.

I'll post a picture as soon as I can get my camera back from wherever my daughter has put it away and get some batteries. 

I feel kinda bad because he wasn't my first choice, actually I was considering 2 others, but couldn't take them home that day.  So then the shelter people took him out and gave the info on him, and he seemed perfect.  He is such a good fit here, like he's always been here, like he was meant to be here.  The more I think about it, the more I think maybe I was meant to have this dog.  Especially now he's here.

Something funny, there was aconga line of 4 dogs sniffing butt going around the kitchen table yesterday, an elderly dachshund, a border terrier, and two fat beagles.

My sister had a beagle when her kids were young, they named him Droopy for his floppy ears. He was a sweet dog.

When we were kids thats all we ever had in our house 90% of the time. Hounds are smelly, loud ,live to run out the door, chase anything that moves,sweet, loyal and gentle. And nothing on the face of the earth is cuter than  a beagle pup. Good goin! I count my blessings every day with my latest adoption Maggie. Not a beagle but an older girl.Its so nice not to go thru all the puppy nonsense. I can't wait to see a pic.

Well we went to the vet for shots and to be looked over today.  Si has a clean bill of health except for a slight heart murmur and the fact he weighed in at almost 40 pounds.  He is at least ten pounds overweight.  He is allowed only 8 oounces of his diet dog food a day.  Hopefully, now that he can move about if he wants to and is eating the low cal food, he will lose some weight and thusly maybe the murmur too.  He got a bath today, even though the shelter gave him one Friday, the white parts of him still have what I call kennel stains.  It will probably take a few more baths to clean those up.  He is such a nice dog.

Neighbour took in a Hound from a shelter in another town to foster. This poor baby has been shot with a shotgun in the face!  They just came back from an emergency vet visit as the dog hadn't eaten in 48 hours, nor peed in 76 hours, and was refusing liquids. They were doing infusions on him to keep him hydrated. The poor baby is healing nicely but the leather muzzle put on to hold his jaws in place had rubbed the dog raw and was starting to get infected. A good wash, some more meds for his face and a mesh muzzle that can be taken off 3-4 times a day has made a world of difference. He came home, peed, ate and drank and wanted companionship for the first time in the 4 days they have had him. Now come the hard part, finding a good home for him. This was a result of a neighbor fued & the dog's owner doesn't have the funds to cover this dogs surgery or meds even though he works 6 12 hour days (which means he wouldn't be home to give meds as needed).

I'm glad your Si didn't go through any of this. Your Si is so lucky to have your home as his own, not to mention your heart!
