I will try to search for what I saw but have to run out now....
I just saw the most amazing birdie outside!!!!!!!!  Just as I ran to get the cam and ready to shoot.....he took off!!!!  pullhair
He was maybe the size of a cardinal....bigger than a junco, smaller than a blue jay.
Think his tail, back and top of head were blackish and the front of him!  His belly was bright white with a splash of bright red near the top!  He was amazing and I have never seen this bird before!  He did not appear to be a woodpecker but could slightly resemble one and his white and red was so vibrant!  loveuk
What the heck was he????!!!!!!!

Definitely sounds like a rose breasted grosbeak. We get them occasionally. They're really pretty :)

When my mind comes to wild birds I always think of  you Lorek since you were so quick to help with id of the Junco's and Tozie and I were on the same page too!
I did look into woodpeckers...then white and red breasted birds...and wala!  Just seems like it would take forever to try to ID but we did pretty good!  First look I thought it was some kind of tropical bird! dmblaf

Yep, definitely a rose breasted grosbeak. I saw my first last week and had to get my camera to zoom in - my first thought was downy woodpecker too, but I knew something was different. I blog with several birders and it seems like these guys have been more visible this year. I don't know if their numbers are up, or maybe the mild winter???
