A year ago my friend bird sat a Senegal for his friend. His friend went for a holiday. When he came back he refused to take his bird home. He asked my friend to sell the Senegal. The Senegal was badly neglected by the owner because he didn't have time to spend with bird. The bird is still with my friend till today. My friend called me yesterday asking me if I was interested to keep the bird for FREE because the owner didn't want to take back the bird and also refused to answer his call. As my friend is too busy in birds breeding and handfeeeding, the Senegal is still neglected too. He thought the bird would be in better care if given to me.
I will be collecting the bird on Friday. This bird is not tame. He allows my friend to scratch his head, no step up, no petting. And had never been out of cage.

awww, poor little guy. that is so great of you to take him in, E! you deserve a big pat on the back. your flock is really growing! cant wait to hear how things go. i'm sure he'll blossom in your excellent care. i'll be waiting for pics! i couldnt imagine abandoning one of my angels... heck i cant imagine taking a holiday/vacation and not having them with me. they are as much a part of my family as drew. but then just saying, oh keep them? i just dont get it.

pullhair I don't get it either but then again if you don't know beforehand what you are getting into..you don't know what you are in for and the proper way to care and handle things. Kudos to you E and family. Senegals are wonderful parrots. Am I biased , yes, but they are great! You are wonderful with your fids, I have faith you will make great strides with him

E? Senegals are one of the most under rated Parrots as far as smarts, instincts, loving nature and much more. Advice? Go slow and learn this birds trust and in return he will trust you. These guys can be quite stubborn but also display an intelligence that can match any parrot. Once that is accomplished all else will come much easier. They love attention for their antics so if is a positive one re enforce this to gain the trust. I am happy and thankful you are opening your home and heart for this Sennie and have no doubt after time this guy will be flourishing in your care

I longed for a Senegal as my 2nd parrot before I got my tiels. I couldn't find a baby Senegal as nobody breeds them here. There was one at a nearby pet store and I was thinking over and over whether to get it or not. In the end I got A and P because it would be much easier to harness train babies. I had never wanted to have more than 2 parrots but darn what have I gotten into now.
D, thanks for the input.
As far as I know this Senegal is not in good condition. I have seen him twice. He is mainly on sunflower seeds and millet as he doesn't eat fresh veges.

I am not very good with not tame birds. I'll see what I can do. My hands and head are really full at the moment with A and P and Cocoa chasing one another to roost on me. And I have M and O to take care too. Can you imagine sometimes I had to take turn to take them out one by one, starting with Cocoa, A, P then O?

Well, look at it this way.....he will now be properly cared for. Given healthy foods to eat and love!

As Mar said these guys love to eat and are not fussy. Try offering him good fruits and veggies in a mash of grains etc. Put a few of the sunflower seeds and millet on top so he gets interested from the start. This may entice him and get him on the right track. Also, these guys can be very territorial so be careful when you start handling him out of cage so the other birds or him do not get into a fight.

No, Kito isn't fussy unless it is a blackberry or blueberry. Not sure if it is the color of them, taste or both. And he is a fanatic for dried pasta....and his occasional pizza crust or bread. He loves his carbs! :twirl:
