While feeding the fids today I let Nena and Cleo out of their cages. I moved Nena to the play gym in the middle and placed  Cleo on top of Nenas cage and went to get some water. When I came back in I noticed that Nena had made her way back inside her cage with Cleo still on top. I looked at the top of the cage but saw no blood and so I picked Cleo up and put her in cage. I went back out to get something, when I came in again I went over to talk to Cleo and saw that her toe was bleeding. I've been holding her foot in corn starch but I don't think the bleeding has stopped. I knew it was going to happen and I left...it's happened before to some of my other fids. I'm so stupid. I feel so terrible... I  could have prevented it.  cry

With multiple parrots these things can and will happen.  Don't beat your self up!  It just happened to us a few weeks ago.  How is the toe now?

Call your vet if it doesn't stop.

Don't beat yourself up, accidents happen. You didn't do this on purpose to cause the injusry, it was an accident.

Thank you for posting this, it's an excellent reminder that we must always be vigilant in what we are doing with our birds. Something as innocent as setting a bird down while our minds are preoccupied can cause injury to that bird. You're a good caregiver.  hugu

The bleeding has stopped. She's eaten some millet and has been preening a bit. She's now in my lap cuddled up and warm. I haven't really gotten a good look at the toe yet, corn starch is covering it.  And thanks for the support guys, it means a lot. I love my babies so very much and it kills me that she got hurt like this.

hugu I just went through the same thing.  Everyone is right, don't blame yourself.  I felt bad too.  Poor Squiggy as nice as can be and he got bit by one of the IRN.  Squiggs bled off/on for 2 days because of the location of the bite on his toe...in like the knuckle region.  I have found the corn starch takes longer to clot the blood, but as Sondra said if it doesn't stop get to the vet.  Something may have been bitten worse than you can see.
 hugu

Glad it stopped! Just keep an eye on it.  Squiggy preened like there was no tomorrow afterwards too!

We really cant stop ourselves from feeling badly. Keeps us on our toes. Some time ago, (same species mind you) it happened so fast...while they were playing on my shoulders, Pippo went into a jealous rage and managed to bite Cat's tongue! stuff will happen, feathered kids as well as featherless kids. ya know?

The bleeding is stopped but I think her toe is broken.  hmm I feel so bad...I know things happen but I still feel it's my fault. I know I'm even more of an awful parront for not being able to take her to a vet.  bangdhead

I'm coming into this convo a little late but just a heads up. If her toe is broken. U nEed o get her to a vet.  If u don't she could very well die. I'm not being mean I'm being honest.  Kiwi was in a similar situation last year and he still lost half a toe. Without it he easy would have lost more.  They are too prone to infection from necrotic tissue, even ifu do treat the open wound.   For her healthyou need to find a way to get her seen.

Excellent info Lorek! It is true, a break from a bite always needs to be seen by a vet because infection almost always sets in and if not yreated you could lose your bird. The toe almost always is lost in these situations.

And is there much they could do for a broken toe or would it just be preventing infection?  Do you think I could wrap the little one next to the big one so it could kinda heal straight?

if there is an open wound, covering it without some kind of antibiotic would just create a nice warm dark place for bacteria to thrive. :(
I am curious, what is it that makes it look broken? is it bent funny or something?   confused or is it that she won't use it?
can you post a pic?  they are more worried about infection than setting the bone. infection is a quick and dirty killer.  I am so sorry you have to go through this.  I paid $200 at the vet for Julian, I think i got off pretty light in the cost dept. she is an awesome vet and did not charge me for the follow-up checks.  I was stunned.

It's bent a bit before the nail so it's just the tip.  Is there anything I can do here to help it not get infected?
