I took the plunge and ordered an Avitech Panel heater a minute ago, it comes with free cage mounts right now ($10 value). I also ordered a thermostat ($40) so it doesn't get over a certain temp...no more worry about draftiness! he will be in Bermuda all the time now! shipping was good ($11 and change) and no tax. I have heard nothing but good things about this thing, and he can move away from it if it gets to be too much. I know it gets chilly in the mornings in the eat-in kitchen, so now he will be toasty.  happyjack

Whishy,
Promise yourself that you will check that heater EVERYDAY for beak marks - if a bird chews through it they could get real sick & if they hit the wires while it's plugged in they could get electrocuted. I won't even het a thermal perch because every one of our birds chew their perches. I had to get a plastic swing perch for our Too - he even chews the big cement perches! Everyone gets rope perches in their cages also simply because they last longer than anything else. LOL!

I promise. :) Are you familiar with the Avitech heater? I know one person who has personally used it for a year, because they are expensive so not many, I had to save up for a while....  confused  if it is too close to the cage for comfort, it can be mounted on the wall like a picture, it will be my plan B.

I only know of one person who had them. Her Too ate one and died.
There is a place that sells ceramic heaters here, they are 28" by 28" square and mount on the walls. You can paint them if you use a certain paint. We have one in the shop, one in the kitchen and one in the bedroom. Higgys cage is about 3 feet away from one, Powders playgym is about the same from one also.

thanks Sondra, i will definately be very picky about where this thing ends up around his cage, also he is not allowed to climb on his cage, he is either in it, or on his playgym/on me/on the coffee table/on his table perch. it weighs one pound.

Is it possible to lay it under his cage in a corner? If you pull the pan out an inch or two the heat will rise into the cage and if you place another perch in that corner at the same height as his sleeping perch he'll have the option to sit nearer the heat or sit away from the heat. Most cages have a second grate under the pan and you could attach it to that.

I talked to my friend that has the same heater, and she said that even with the attachments, it is uncomfortably too close to the cage, so it is going on the wall behind. :)

Thank you! I'd have worried myself sick knowing you had a heater on a cage. In all honesty, I'd NEVER put anything that could possibly kill one of my birds on/in a cage, I was just afraid to write it like I just did because I didn't want you to be offended (or anyone else). I really care about all birds and wouldn't want anyone to loose a bird because of something they bought and put in a cage, but sometimes I can come across as a "know-it-all" and I'm not, I'm still learning too, but when you have a friend who lost a beloved bird because of a heater that attached to a cage  - well, I still remember her heartache. She ended up giving her birds away because she was warned by someone else and felt she wasn't a good caregiver anymore. So sad........

oh Sondra, I am a newbie, more newbied than anyone here I am pretty sure.  You would have not offended me, and it takes a lot to pi$$ me off.  :pit:  LOL. This is why I like seeing things in person before I buy them, and not having a bird shop of any kind in the STATE that I know of, I have to cross my fingers and click "buy" even after i have done all the reading and research, there is nothing compared to holding it in your hands...unless there is someone you know who has and can give you their input.  thumb  I appreciate you telling me about the too, it made me think about how I was going to use this product.  and I would be one to also give up on myself after "causing" a tragedy like that, I would never forgive myself.  hugu

ok, I got it like 2 weeks ago, but then it got mild here (wouldn't it figure) so it wasn't needed and I wanted to put it ouside in the sunroom to burn off the new appliance smell/gasses..so that being done, I installed it today.  IT IS NICE.  thumb  nice, warm radiant heat..ahhhh...I can put my hand on it when it is on and it doesn not burn..it is not too much or too little..and I spent the extra $40 to get the thermostat so it isn't on all the time...only when it gets below a set temp (I Have it set to 73). I put it on the wall, and unless you are LOOKING for it, you would never know it was there. I liked it right away, but more importnant HE does. he spends more time around it in the chilly mornings and evenings. I go over to his corner and you can feel the area up there is nice and cozy.  I think it was a good investment. I know now he won't get chilly this winter.

Here's what I do, if it matters...NOTHING! I live in the mtns, so you'd THINK that the birds would freeze their tailfeathers off. And no doubt it get a little cold to them. But the heat that radiates from our wood stove? HOLY SHIZNIZZ! All we have to do is open the birdroom door, and wihtin 5 minutes, its nice and warm in there. At night, they have a THICK blanket that seems to keep them warm enough.

I was considering a thermo-perch, but decided against it just cuz Rodney chews through ANYTHING.
