ok, besides the Thermoperch, what is a good heater for birds? some attach to the sides, some are just there, I want to get one for Julian for the cold months, it gets nippy in here, and we can all put on a sweater (incl the dog), I could put an athletic wrist band on Julian, but I don't think he would like it!

I don't use bird heaters, but I do use a small 25 watt lamp under the pan of Powders cage. I pull the pan 2 inches, pull the paper forward on the grate, place a rope perch the same heigh as his fav perch in a corner, and place the lamp under that corner. This allows heat to rise into the cage, and also allows him to escape direct heat so he doesn't become over heated. I also do not cover the entire cage, I have about 6 inches all the way around the cage open because in the wild there is natural air movement which allows their dander to blow away from them which in turns ensures they are breathing fresh air at all times. I also run a box fan with a good furnace filter attached to the back to ensure air movement throughout the room and to catch that excess dander - cuts down on dust too! Just bounce the air going through the fan upwards, off a wall (tilt fan back & remember warm air rises!)

You know Wishy, I really like these panels
http://www.avitec.com/Avi-Temp-Infrared-Heat-Panels-p/ihp.htm
Are they more energy efficient then the light bulbs ya think? I dont know enough about them, but I was thinking of getting a couple for the fids. And I wonder if with a little google search if they can be found at a better price?

personally, i think julian would be adorable in his little birdie snuggie!  laugh laffhrd c'mon if you can get him to wear a toothbrush holder on his leg, he'll wear a little snuggie for ya!
i use got skittles a thermaperch. he seems to like it okay. of course, it hasnt gotten cold since i got it in his cage. we'll see. last winter my heater broke, it got down to  50 in my house before i got a space heater. and all the fids did fine. they didnt even puff up. i doubt your house is gonna get cold enough, unless your heater breaks, to really cause julian any issues. doesnt he sleep in a cozy hut? marley does, and every morning, even that 50 degree morning, his little feet were just as warm as could be. (tho, skittles little feet were a little on the cool side that day) my point, i doubt you need it. at worst maybe a heating pad under the  grate, to warm the air at night just a few degrees. i keep my heat on 68 (cause if i set it higher, it trips the breaker. old house. old heater.) and i have a space heater in the livingroom for when it gets lower than that in the livingroom where the fids are. like you say, we can just put on a sweater or throw another blanket on the bed. if you use sondra's lightbulb idea, i would suggest a red bulb from a reptile supply. (they have them at petsmart for about $6) the base is the same as a regular bulb and they have the same watts. i used a 100 watt for the snake cage in the winter, it raised the tank temp... i wanna say 8 to 10 degrees over the air temp. and the red color doesnt interfear with the sleep patterns. they have some reptile domelamps that will clip so you can actually clip it over the cage if you want. and then you can get a full spectrum bulb too and use it day and night. they sell some bulbs specially for birds that have that same standard base too, i dont remember where i saw them, i'll have to look for them.

they are on clearance at WalMart..I think.,..why not just buy a dog sweater?? they are way cuter and fit better! it is so drafty on my couch I am considering a snuggie!! the curtains blow with the draft! it gets cold in here in the winter, and he is such a little sprout..during the day it is cold too, not as much.. but if the kids are coming in from playing in the snow, it gets cold REALLY quick in here!  coldbrr

Ya know... Just last week I got home from work and walked into the bedroom and immediately heard this rattling. Turned around and I had two huge green marshmallows shivering up next to each other and rattling thier cage. Poor lil fuzzballs. I immediately dug out their witer blanket and thier ceramic heat lamps. They warmed right up. I just don't understand how they are so cold intolerant compared to the others, but they are.

Anyhow, since mango refuses to use the happy hut I was thinking of buying them a heated perch.  I have heard nothing but good things about them. And if it goes over well, maybe I'll get andi and the green cheeks one each too. I do know I need a new space heater for us all this winter. My room is soooo drafty here... I blame it one the rediculously flat landscape of this state lol

I got fleece fabric (like for flannel sheets-thin) in a good color and put them on the curtain rods in the window last winter, it stopped the draft like you would not believe. I was shocked at how well. maybe if you do that and get the perches, you will have a toasty sanctuary. !   :twirl:

You know what? I gotta tell you about these curtains I have in the living room , that I should also get for the bedroom. They are not "thermo" curtains, but sure as sugar plum fairies they work as well.  The colors are so rich and the prices are..well ok. Sometimes these go on sale down to 11.99 and that's when I pounce!
