Hey! Remember my Petco story the other day about little Bob loveuk and how he only had 1 shrivelly toy in his cage? Actually, all the birds had empty cages. AnD how I was going to write a letter for the affects it might have? Well, GOt a response back but seems almost to ... thinkin3..agreeable...accommodating? What do u think?
I was getting dog and bird supply and took notice of the little green cheeked conure in the cage. For a chain pet store bird, he was surprisingly engaging. HE and I had some fun communicating and as much as I wanted to take him home I once again had to admit to myself that the inn is full. I was sure that the soon enough the right person would come along and give him a forever home. Then I realized that he as well as the other caged birds have the minimal cage comforts. Parrots are extremely intelligent interactive creatures. They require mental stimulation. They should have at least 3 toys that are species specific. I was told that the green cheek has been in there since May.What will it take you guys to get you to take better care of your parrots?  Many believe you should not be selling them at all. shame shame!

Dear Deb,
Thank you for contacting PETCO regarding your concern with our store at 2211 S COLLEGE AVE No200.
I completely understand how upsetting it is seeing those Parrots not properly cared for. It is obvious that you have a true passion for animals, and we share your passion as well.
Our standards of care ensure that all animals are checked-on every hour. During this check, we observe the health and behavior of the animals, refill food & water and tidy up as needed. This check is in addition to the regular full service feeding and cleaning that all animals receive on a daily basis. This store doesn ' t seem to meet our high standards of animal care. To that end, I have forwarded your concerns to the appropriate upper management in charge of the store to ensure your complaint is addressed. We have every confidence our managers will respond with urgency to make sure an animal has everything it needs and is in good health. I assure you we take complaints like these very seriously.

If you feel that the manager does not respond appropriately to a situation, please don’t hesitate to call us, toll free, at 888-824-PALS (7257). Thank you again for contacting PETCO. ¦
Sincerely,
Reggie A.

Go back in in a week and see what they did to change things. IMHO I don't feel any store should sell birds or ANY animal, again just my opinion as I'm strictly pro-adoption and I'm not trying to, nor do I want to, offend anyone.

I too wish animals were not sold in pet stores.  It is also hard not to think you are saving that little life though as well.
Out of your stylish Italian names.....where did "Bob" come from????  What about Paulie, Mikey, Petie, Dino..Sal???  Cannoli, Risotto....Muuuuuuhzarel????   Situation!!!!  (Jersey Shore)....ok enough rambling.
You are going to be obsessed with lil Bob, so find out!

first let me say, i got marley from a petco. the girl who cared for him was passionate. she seemed to truly love him. i remember that he not only had 3 or 4 toys in his cage, when i took him home they sent his weaning buddy the ducky and his "favorite" hanging toy. now, since i've been back a few times. and there are rarely more than a couple toys in the cages. they are on a seed diet. and they take them to the evil vet that butchered skittles. even tho i told them what that vet did.
you're right, seems to be accommodating. now it could be a couple things. #1 maybe the person you contacted really cares about the animals and agrees with you completely and will do exactly as they said. and they will expect it to be taken care of properly. #2 its just the smoke that most corporations blows up the booty of the public. #3 company policy states blah blah blah but other procedures make it nearly impossible. for example: McOpCo policy was food was only good for xx number of minutes. but they didnt want you to waste more than xx amount of food. so the only way to hit the second goal was to stretch the first one. (one of the reasons i left McOpCo) now, when it gets to the store manager they will have to follow all the rules associated with customer complaints. they will talk to this person and that person. they may call you and tell you how sorry they are and what they are going to do to fix it. they will most likely take a couple toys off the shelf and put in with little "Bob." then they will give you their name and number and tell you if you observe anything else that is unacceptable to feel free to contact them. last, they will thank you for bringing it to their attention because it is just so hard to keep up with everything and sometimes they place trust in someone who drops the ball. not because they dont care, but because they just dont know any better or because they are overwhelmed. or maybe because they are distracted.

but in reality. they may care about the animal to some degree but they are there to make a profit. they are allowed to spend xx number of dollars on the animals and those dollars are most likely used up in food. the longer they have the animal, the lower their profit is, the less they have to spend on the animal. eventually, they loose more money every day they have the creature and are not inspired to spend more by giving them a toy they are just gonna tear up. very likely once those new toys are destroyed, they will not be replaced, unless you complain again. and after you complain a few times, your name will be in a database and they will quit taking you seriously. you will be labeled a whiner.
btw, did you notice they didnt mention company policy regarding toys or quantity of toys? betcha it's only one per cage. they only mention sanitation and food policy

no, i'm an optimist.... really. but having been a store manager, i used to get all the complaints for my restaurant. sometimes i took the complaint seriously. once an employee was fired because it was the 5th complaint, from different people, about the same basic thing and i had observed the same violation several times. (that only happened once in 10 years) but usually, the customer got  a form letter, a couple free meal tickets (cost my store less that $5, but looked like it was worth $20), and a personal call from me following a set list of components.

but i'm sure your complaint will result in little Bob (and any other birds there right now) getting a few new toys from the shelf. so you did make a difference for little Bob.

Muuuuuuhzarel laffhrd  "Bob" because as soon as I saw him he started doing that quick head bob thing.  loveuk  Actually, I have a name in my head that must eventually be realized. It's what I first called Catania, when I was told she was a he. "Bastiano" or "Bastian" or "Bastiana" So I would have a Pippo, Catania and Bastiano. now those are Proud Italian names! Not friggin' Situation or *bleep*ty I mean Shnooki or Mook or Chooch. *Deb starts to hum the Italian national anthem...right hand over heart the other holding a sauce drenched meatball.
Anywho..I dont really have anything problems with Petco. The cages where clean, but they where cages not "home". And if they have to be in there for 6 months  make sure they have a reason to open their eyes in the morning. I've met the dept mgr or the one that runs the bird area. Nice enough.
Now, about Bob again. 200.00 bucks. notcare That is money that I can use for Cat's next Dr. visit. I cant take it away from her.  sadboy3
And besides, you know me! I come on strong and die soon after parting the gate. Remember the Jimmy thing? What I put you guys through. Don't encourage me! Yes he was adorable and we kinda picked each other. But I can't. Just can't!
*deb dramatically sits up pushing back chair away from computer. Back of hand over brow,
"To mine own fids be true!"

I also see mostly one toy in the cages here, in fact most of the birds and bird items are gone.  :(  They have made way for more doggie related stuff.  It really makes me irritated when the toy is sooooo huge the bird can't even play with it.  However I find that the people in the store are not "bird" saavy at all.  They know nothing about them.  When  go in I make sure to play and spend time with the birdies in there and give em all some love.

$200??!! at a petco?! i'm stunned. the last two conures i saw at the local chain stores were $699 and $899. the $699 one was a GCC at petsmart and the $899 one was a sun at a petco. even the quakers (blue ones   loveuk ) were $499 the last tiime i was there. there was a sun at petco (i wanna say $899? but not sure) when i got marley, they had him for at least a year and a half. they were stunned marley sold as quickly as he did. he was $1400. yeah, i spent more on marley than i did on skittles and the two cages he came with! i know now that they gouged me, but it was worth it. marley is a gem!  loveuk  anyway, i wandered off subject again. (have ya noticed i do that alot?!) i understand, deb. i see all sorts of angels i would love to have, but i have to remember my angels. and it wouldnt be fair to anyone if i even got one more. i'm sure someone will see Bob and get a great fid!

I thought I saw them for more money. Around the 600.00 price range. But that was before the recession. They must be hurting. If that price comes down any further.... I dont know if I'll be able to contain myself.  happy Until then, I keep telling myself the person or family that  finds him will pick up on his personality immediately and realize what a great companion he will make.  Not too long ago, I saw another gcc at the mall pet store that for some reason, I never go into. Anyway, this little guy was the complete opposite. I felt so sorry for him. His eyes were dull. Not sick, just dull. and he had his back turned to the viewer. I tried the same shenanigans on him, and nothing. Made me so sad. I never liked that pet store.

It has been a while since I have been to the one here.  There cages did seem big compared to most stores but they were lacking very much with toys in the cages.  The prices then were pretty hefty.  I did see a sign that promoted adoption first so I guess thats some progress.  I hate going to these stores as I can't take it seeing them in those cages etc.
