While giving the flock a snack of popcorn, I noticed Aussies one toenail was curved upward.  I quickly passed out the rest of the popcorn and went back to look.  I now could see blood in the area.  I got the first aide kit out and by that time D had gotten back from the store.  We got Aussie into the bathroom and cleaned his foot off and applied some styptic.  I checked his other nails and they were all fine except for one looking a little long..so D just nipped the tip off of that and then that began to bleed so another application of styptic and back to enjoy some popcorn.  I will keep a good eye to make sure there is no more bleeding from any of his nails.  Little guy was a trooper and did very well!   thumb  Anni looked mad as a hatter when Aussie went back in the cage.  I think she was pissed that we interrupted snack time!

-I would add little pliers, like jewelery pliers in case of a broken blood feather
-Styptic gel with benzocaine in it (we got it at a pet store)  It did not hurt Aussie when applied....flour or corn starch will work as well but the styptic will work faster in my experience.
-Tiny clippers either nail clippers or tiny ones they use for kittys and emery board for clipping and filing nails

Aussie is doing well and no signs of bleeding!  loveuk

hmmm, how did i miss this? i have a first aid kit. (its actually equipted for all the animals, not just the birds) it has:
needle nose pliers, plain saline solution, gauze pads, that no stick wrap, kitty nail clippers, human nail clippers, styptic pencil, sharp scisors, neosporin cream (not ointment), q-tips, surgical tape, nail file, cotton balls, my peti paws, 81 mg asprin, corn starch. i also got a box on clearance at wal mart for $4 that has instant ice pack, thermal blanket, tweezers, blunt tip scisors, and some more gauze and tape.
it comes in handy. when i need something i'm not running around the house looking for everything. it's all right there together. even tho i have most of the stuff in other parts of the house too. when i clip birdie nails i pull out the kit before i even start. as a matter of fact, i do it when i trim rocky's nails too.
i got most of the stuff on clearance at work and put it in a $1 plastic box from walmart.

Yup, I cut nails last night and had the kwik stop gel out. It works great and I found it at Wegmans grocery of all places for 6 bucks. They also sell the Dr. Browns budgie seed for 2 bucks cheaper a bag than the pet store. And Occasiionally I find the ecotrition there too . Cheaper than Petsmart which is right next door. So sometimes I stop there first and see what they have. Also, all the bulk organic grains are cheap there too.

The difference between kids and parrots is that it's funny when a parrot talks back.

A couple of other things that should be kept with your First Aide kit, especially for people in tornado/hurricane prone areas is bird/animal food, & water (a month supply), make sure you rotate the food out to keep it fresh and check the dates on your water.
In your First Aide kit you should add body warmers. Body warmers can be bought at any store that sells hunting supplies. I have used these to keep my birds warm in their carriers in the winter when we had to evacuate the house in an emergency, I put them on the bottom of their carriers (on the outside - not inside the carrier), and on the sides where beaks can't pick at them, wrap the carrier in a blanket and place in a car. They are also good for injured birds in shock on the way to a vet. Simply place at one end of the carrier, again on the outside, this way the bird can move away from the area if it gets too warm.
