Feathered Friends Forever Bird Rescue
HARLEM, Ga. --- The Feathered Friends Forever organization says they are home to the largest exotic bird rescue in the nation. With more than 800 birds, this 10 acre compound its quite a sight on the outskirts of Harlem, GA. In operation since 1998, the non-profit group says they have been a rescue point for birds around the nation.
Recent economic struggles, and a rise in the foreclosure rate have resulted in many of the birds in recent months, owners say. Local military deployments and job losses are also some of the reason owners give up the expensive pets, leaders say. Some owners also abandon to birds because they get too noisy, messy, or aggressive.
The center says they are expanding to meet the growing need for shelter. Right now, the operation costs about 180 dollars per day to operate. Those costs are expected to rise with a growing number of birds on site. There are dozens of varieties, each separated by breed and housing needs. Many of the birds are older, especially the parrots, with some as old as 95.
