The Hyacinth Preservation Society Inc.

A weekly look at the needs of an area nonprofit

Organization: The Hyacinth Preservation Society Inc. is an organization started in 2009 by Cara O'Keefe dedicated to eradicating the importation of the Hyacinth Macaw into the United States. Other goals include helping promote improvement in captive breeding programs, helping protect them from extinction and aiding in rescue.

The birds are native to Brazil, specifically concentrated in the Paraguay River area. They are the largest parrots alive.

"At the moment, I am taking care of the ones I have at my house," O'Keefe said. "But they are very large birds, and I won't be able to take many more here at home. So, I will need to start looking for a facility soon."

She has been caring for her birds for more than three years.

O'Keefe said the group is awaiting nonprofit status.

“My brother and sister birds, you should praise your Creator and always love him: He gave you feathers for clothes, wings to fly and all other things that you need. It is God who made you noble among all creatures, making your home in thin, pure air. Without sowing or reaping, you receive God’s guidance and protection.”

The difference between kids and parrots is that it's funny when a parrot talks back.
