Bought a package of "Mini" raisin boxes for the fids recently and was handing some out today.  Kito seemed interested in the box so I gave it to him.  He actually grabbed it and played with it for 2 hours ;D  Next time I will close it with a few raisins inside!  Who would think a nutritious snack could be also used as a toy! knuppel2.gif

To cute, I thought I heard they are finding raisins toxic ?

I found this on dogs still looking for info on birds....But if raisins are this toxic to dogs, what would they do to birds who are much much smaller ?

It’s no secret now that grapes and raisins can cause some dangerous reactions in dogs. Some dogs can even go into acute renal failure after ingestion. What is scary is that after all the research being done into this, the mechanism within the grapes/raisins causing this is still unknown. It is also unknown whether other species besides dogs are affected.

Since there’s still so much to be learned on what exactly is causing this, therefore every grape or raisin ingestion should be considered potentially dangerous and veterinary attention should be sought. The first sign is likely to be vomiting, and most often that is when owners notice their dog had been eating this, as they will come up in the vomit. This usually occurs within 2 hours of eating it, and signs of kidney failure can develop with 24 hrs to several days afterwards. This may be noticed by increased thirst, increased urination, no urination, and/or neurological signs.

IV fluid therapy given after activated charcoal to absorb the toxic substance can help prevent renal failure from starting if done early enough. Supportive care and monitoring are especially important in these cases. Generally, if kidney values on blood-work appear normal after 72 hours, chances are good it was avoided. A life threatening toxicity can be avoided by quick detection and proper care.

Not every dog reacts to grapes and raisins similarly. It is likely that in high amounts, all dogs will have a problem, but some dogs are sensitive enough to go into kidney failure after just 0.3 ounces per pound, while others can have much more and not be phased at all. The safest thing to do here? Avoid giving it intentionally, no doubt; and be careful with what is in your dog’s reach- both inside and out.

I am not positive on the research of raisins and birds but, like I said if they are this toxic to dogs then I am not taking any chances. I just read a article where a dog died after only eating 5 raisins  :o

you should send it to the marketing dept. of Sunmaid. (if they are OK for birds) they would probably love to have Kito in a raisin ad!

I too have heard this regarding dogs and it is the real deal.  As far as birds or parrots I have not heard anything negative.  I have fed either raisins or grapes(minus the seed/pit)to my flock for 3 years and at about 5 days per week with no ill affects.  I think it has more to do with dogs being mostly carnivores which parrots are not.  If I or anyone else finds more about this including negative affects on birds/parrots please update ;)

I feed grapes / raisins occasionally with no ill effects, but only as an occasional treat. Everybody had a grape for breakfast yesterday. Any more info would be appreciated here too!
You know about dogs...I have a list that says banana's are bad for dogs too......and onions real bad, as is garlic, tomatoes, avacados, and most nuts. My dogs have ate spaghetti sauce with no ill effects.
Plus all the usuals...caffiene, alcohol, chocolate....

And a special warning for those that feed a raw diet....raw salmon...it can contain a parasite with a 90% mortality rate.
