Ok, so I went to the mall, where they have the Pet City. Of course to see Bob the Harlequin Macaw. He is such a sweety pie! Anywho, I go to THAT MALL just to see him. The other day, me and my uncle went to go see Bob, and he heard budgies! Before that night, I had no idea of the other birds! Budgie's, Finches, Canary's, tiels, an IRN, and Lovies.
So of course, me being obsesssed with birds, I go over to look at them. BIG MISTAKE!!
Just to start, they had 10 budgies in ONE 1'x1'x1' cage, 4 tiels in 2 seperate 1'x1'x1' cages. The IRN was in a cage NOT MUCH BIGGER that the others!
The tiels..omg it makes me PISSED just tjhinking about it...so compacted and SCARED!! All seed diet, FILTHY water! And to boot, the pied female was BLEEDING FROM HER NARES!! And the blood was all over her face too! AND she was with ANOTHER BIRD!!
So I went to the front, and brought it up to the girl working there, "Oh, she just has a respiratory infection..and she is on meds." WHAT IN HELL FIRE??? This bird was THAT SICK and in VERY CLOSE proximity to the other birds?? I about flipped! I gave her a piece of my mind. Afterwords, I said my farewell to the poor tiel, and as I was there, a woman said "I want a bird!" I quickly said "DO NOT buy from here!" and showed her the tiels.
And another thing? They want 180 BUCKS per Tiel!!

When I went home, I washed up VERY WELL before going near my birds.

Sorry, I had to vent. I will never buy from there again, and I am trying to get animal control to take a look. Some people...

Makes me sick to hear about it. Its so frustrating to be helpless in a situation like that. I can't even walk into Petland around here. I just want to throw up its so nasty. I know just how you feel.

I just can't believe the way some people treat birds!!Or any animal for that matter! Oh and you can believe, I was FUMING when I walked out. But of course, BOB was well taken care of! HUGE cage, clean food and water, veggies, toys! C'mon! Tiels are people too!

I have called the SPCA on Petland 3 times. No response. They really are focused on the dog / cat issues and just don't get the bird thing. I was told as long as there was food / water there was nothing they could do. When my daughter tipped me off about the macaw being abused, I was told the same thing, SPCa and animal control,  even though the water was filthy, the food crap, and the cage a mess. They just don't get it or care. And there in lies the problem, so we should always try to educate. Sometimes its best to bite the bullet if you can get just a tiny bit of info out there. Anything is better than nothing.

Oh Bilbo, I am so sorry to hear that...maybe if you make a video and post it to youtube? put the name of the store and the location.  embarrasment is a great way for people to change their evil ways, that is why stores put "mary Jones writes bad checks" "John Smith writes bad checks" on their light-up signs...Ihave also seen one on a convienence store sign that said "Quickie Mart sells Cigarettes to minors".

well, maybe have someone else do it, they will recognize you for sure! "What in hell fire" indeed.  evil.gif

Unfortunately this is common with many pet stores.  It is hard to look at times while getting supplies.  We just do what we can, bring out the awareness and pray there are stricter rules and regulations and that those will be enforced :-\

I think a lot of these chain stores are going to stop selling birds altogether. The Pat Smart here used to sell big birds but they stopped after I *bleep*-slapped them over the conditions of a grey they had and I noticed last week that they had closed down their bird section totally. I think they have figured out that keeping birds healthy is a little harder than keeping fish.

I think everything concerning pet stores falls under the Dept of Agriculture. :(

I've noticed that the big chain stores aren't too bad with caring for their birds, but the smaller "mom & pop" stores can be. Unfortunately, the spca probably can't do anything because technically the birds have food, water, and shelter. :(  They should set a higher bar when it comes to required bird care.
