Most vets will run a check on leg bands as it helps prevent legal action against them if the bird was stolen, this will give you a hatch date, or you can try here:

http://www.legbandregistry.com/view

She's not banded, but I am told she was born in florida and raised by a breeder there. Don't know if she was ever banded as I am her 3rd owner. Our vet tells me that sometimes they are removed if they cause irritation.

Thanks for the welcomes. I'm happy to have found you  grouphug

Welcome to the flock Tammy.  hugu

Be sure & post lots of pictures, we love pictures around here. We love to drool  drool over gorgeous fiddies.  droolon2

Laurie does love & trust you already & that says a great deal about you.  thumb Birds know when someone is worthy of their love.  loveuk

She sounds like a great bird, especially since she has had 2 previous owners. Greys are wonderful birds, many years ago I had a Timneh & he was the best bird I ever had the pleasure to know.  smile3

Tammy, did your vet check to see if she is micro-chipped? Most owners will micro chip if they remove the band. You may want to consider getting her Micro-chipped so that if she's ever lost you can prove she's yours.

I didn't think about the micro chipping, Sonya, and my vet didn't mention it. I know she was x rayed about 15 years ago (due to respiratory illness - first owner was a smoker) and there was no mention of a chip. I wonder if it would show up on x ray? From what I have been told, she was raised by a back yard breeder. I suspect she was never banded or chipped, and being roughly 24, she would have been born before the wild bird conservation act in 1992.

Her first owner was my dad's neighbor, who reported visiting her at the breeders home when she was a baby. When he died, his wife asked my Dad if he would take her. My Dad has had her for roughly 15 years. (he lives 1,000 miles away, so I only ever saw Laurie on brief annual visits). Honestly, my dad's health is not good and I think Laurie has been neglected for a long time. (maybe why she is so happy to be with us). Anyway, I feel pretty comfortable that the information we have is accurate.

I will check into having a chip placed, though!

wow what a beauty!!! I am so happy you joined us!  clap towel handshappy

is she a plucker too? I found that a lot of books sometimes conflict, you take the common stuff or the stuff that makes the most sense and then pursue that... the older books often have mis-information (like Grit for parrots!! YIKES!) I am happy you are reading and reading some more, it takes a lot of self-education to do this and you are on the right track.   thumb  I am glad she is out of the smoky air :) the x ray would show the chip.  more pics!  handshappy

is she a plucker too?

My Dad tells me she only plucked when they traveled, but when we arrived in Alabama to get her she had a runny nose  sick and had plucked her chest, belly and legs. Sadly, my Dad and step Mom claim they hadn't noticed.  mad1 (Don't get me started) I don't know how long this was going on, but I can tell you that she hasn't plucked at all in the 4 weeks we have had her - including the drive home from Alabama - YAY.  After 2 vet visits, and lots of antibiotics,  her nose has dried up and feathers are starting to grow back, but I fear she may have a few bald patches. Time will tell.

Hi Tammy!  Sorry I am so late to greet you!
As long as the follicle wasn't damaged the new feathers should come in.  Sometimes it takes forever....our one Lovie Jane will pluck when she is in nesting mode and had a bald spot forever!  I jumped for joy when I saw little feather nibs coming in!   So yes, time will tell!!!
And welcome!

welcome tammy!  hi5  great to meet you, laurie is a real beauty!  loveuk  so glad youve joined our flock. dont worry bout that widdle bare patch, it should come in nicely. as bad as caleb beats up his poor chest, his feathers are trying diligently to come in...if he'll just let them!  slaph
only two of my five have leg bands. Ollie, my amazon, is a crochety old man who was wild caught and never banded. Skittles, my macaw, had one when i got him, but it was much too loose and i had the vet remove it. And Caleb, my cockatoo and newest flock member, didnt come with a band. so i wouldnt fret tooo very much bout laurie being without one, especially since she's been in (and around) the family for so long.   thumb
