I am wondering why some bird rescues/sanctuaries don't respond to adoption applications.  I have a friend who has filled out two adoption applications (both in NJ) about 2 months ago and has not heard anything from the rescues.  She provided her home, work and cell phone numbers.  Just wondering what the normal time frame is that she should hear from them.

I am sorry your friend is not having luck with the rescues in NJ. I am very big on responding to people within 24 hrs, usually its same day,I always atleast let people know we got their application, and that we will be in touch within 3 days.  I find it very disrespectful not to respond. I hear this alot from other people about other rescues, and it bothers me, you respond if you can help or not period!  what I always here from people when I respond is " wow that was fast "
I would tell you friend to find another rescue as this one sounds like it does not care !

I did persuade her to fill out another application with a rescue in PA on Friday.  I just don't understand how these organizations can claim that they are helping birds and then not respond to people who want to give them a loving home.  The places she sent her application to have had the same birds listed on petfinder for months.  It makes me wonder if they ever adopt out any of their birds.

I can tell you my experience with the rescue in the state in which I live. They have the option of filling out an application or "contacting" the rescue via the website and sometimes the information doesnt make it to the right place its like its lost in space. Here in ND the rescues are all volunteer run (not sure if thats how all are or not) and often its just one main person who has a "real" job, family, meetings, running club meetings, and so forth so it might take some time or they mean to get back to you and cant.

I do know however if you look the rescue up there is often a phone number and if you call it someone might get back to you.

I had applied with ours prior to seeking out a breeder but because I had other parrots, a small child, lived more then 100 miles from the facility and could move out of state I was denied. Then during one of their meetings the rules changed it was not 200 miles, no other parrots/animals or small children only if the bird is known to be aggressive towards them, and you could take the bird if you moved out of state. Anyhow long story short as you may know breeder fell through (due to weather but I will always think and speak highly of her and maybe in the future) the rescue contacted me! And I am currently fostering my dream bird (Umbrella cockatoo) its not as easy as buying a baby who comes w no emotional or behavioral issues thats for sure

I can also vouch for Chance in returning messages.  Is this other rescue legit?  It must be frustrating waiting for a response that is never going to come!  My step dad visited a parrot rescue I'm going to say near Edomonton.  And he came back with all kinds of info and the owners told him all about parrots etc.  I emailed them, told them who I was and how impressed my step dad had been, a nice friendly email and I never heard from them either.  :P

I emailed a small rescue here in town to inquire if they knew of any bird sitters as I have to go to Florida in Sept. for my step-daughters wedding and am already trying to line up some responsible care while I am gone. I know I wasn't looking to adopt, but I thought someone who was involved in rescue would be willing to share some info if it was for my birds wellbeing. I never even got the courtesy of a reply. Go figure.....
So...if anybody knows anybody in my neck of the woods (Oswego) PM me and let me know. Their vet does boarding but I will be gone a week and I'm not so sure how much attention they would recieve.

This is the only one I know of, but she is located in Buffalo.  So it may be a tad too far, but will post here just in case..

Both of the places she applied to look legit online.  Hopefully she will have more luck in PA.  Chance would probably be too far for her.

Thanks for all of the responses.  Cross your fingers for her to get a fid to love.

even though a rescue looks legit on the internet, that means nothing, anyone can put up a website.the rescue in Jersey she was trying to contact it wasn't SJAR was it ? south Jersey  animal rescue .If it was that person who was a man posing as a female vet and rescue is now in jail. this is what I mean by anyone can put up a website, as they had a nice site and were frauds. you have to be careful who you deal with.
There is another rescue in NYC called a helping wing, my friend Jeanne runs that, contact her.

I don't know--it may have been one of them.  I will pass along the NYC.

Thanks again.

Well I guess the third time is the charm.  The rescue in PA (The Bailey Foundation) called my friend back and she will be going the rescue on Saturday to meet their available fids.  Hopefully she will find a birdie that loves her there.
