Some melon rinds are toxic and also the flesh immediately around it.  Cantaloupe is one I am sure of and think there are more.

Quite correct on the cantaloupe D! The rind is not smooth, therefore it can't be cleaned of pesticides and it is somewhat porous as it cracks easily when growing and scars. Our birds LOVE cantaloupe as well as watermelon and honeydew.

Grapes from outside the US are something I will NOT give the birds. Pesticides banned in the US are used on food, GRAPES, and have killed many parrots. I remember a man who lost 13 parrots inside of 10 minutes and it was found that the birds died from the grapes. A mold had grown in the grapes, the mold was a direct result of the pesticide. His young daughter was very sick after eating the grapes & had to be hospitaized also. This happened about 6-7 years ago and I haven't given grapes in the winter since.

Sondra, I was randomly looking someting else up in Parrots for DUmmies and found this same information!!! scared the crap outta me for sure!! so US grapes and only in season, gotcha.  Julian is going to be sad though LOL... I recommend if anyone has this book to re-read the section on nutrition pertaining to the safe foods and dangerous foods, etc.. good to keep that stuff in the front of your minds..
I am confused on the grapafood seed extract, I thought it was safe enough to put in the water, ?? so they can't ingest it? I am so confuzzled..  think

When organic growers use grapefruit seed as a pesticide it is used in a concentrate that is too high for birds to safely ingest and it is administered frequently, therefore it's considered toxic in this case.
