Belle Fourche sanctuary is for the birds

Milo Dailey Butte County Post staff | Posted: Sunday, November 15, 2009 6:00 pm

The Black Hills Parrot Welfare and Education Center is now open for business in Belle Fourche.

Owners Cindy and Greg Poulain came to the Black Hills on vacation in 1999. They later moved to Hill City, where they had several businesses. The birds they kept in their businesses brought increasing interest and recognition, they say.

"We always took our birds to stores with us, so when people got rid of birds, they called us," Cindy Poulain said.

That turned fairly quickly into more and more birds and less and less space and time for other activities.

Two years ago, the two formed a nonprofit agency to help the facility grow beyond what they could handle alone.

"There are only a handful of facilities like ours in the United States," Greg Poulain said.

Parrots need a welfare center, they said, because the birds tend to outlive their owners, require specialized care, are very bright -- and anyone who adopts one must take those things into consideration.

Rehabilitation is important to the certified avian specialists.

Nearly one in five of the birds that come to the center have been abused or neglected by people who didn't understand dietary needs or other ways the birds need care.

The new center in Belle Fourche, funded through a nonprofit organization by an Oklahoma donor, offers classes to help teach people considering adopting a bird how to care for it.

The center charges an adoption fee, but it's as much to ensure the prospective owner is serious as to help cover costs of about 50 birds at the center.
