Ok so I always take leftover fresh foods away from my fids within a couple hours...the other day I walked into the bird room and when I turned the light on flies EVERYWHERE! It is not from dirty cages or food being left out but rather a window flies can get in through and since its cold outside they want in. We get this every fall and it drives me nuts...Im running around back there looking like Karate kid with a fly swatter! So I go and get pet safe fly strips and I hung them in the bird room (I take them down when I open cage doors just incase). Well I think we are down to like 15 flies back there today but now I go back there and FRUIT FLIES EVERYWHERE! WTF!? So I look around to try and find food somewhere...found it! Tuki dropped a grape under her cage..but one grape and over night my bird room is taken over by fruit flies!? I dont get it, where do they come from and how can they be that excited over one flippin grape!?

Anyone else get a fly problem in the fall?

I can relate exactly!!!!!!
We will occasionally get the moths, and the moth traps work well.
Now the fruit flies!!  They are a bigger pain in the arse!  D had made mush and some of the left over fruit and peels were in a bag.....and wala!  They are harder to get rid of.  I used fly strips and then read up on them some.....One said to spray windex on them.....can't do that around the fids and I dont use windex anymore.  Another way is to put a piece of fruit or peel into a container and cover it with plastic wrap and poke tiny holes into it (tootpick) and that did work but not on all of them.  I found they first came from the left overs and not the fids food itself or what they threw.
I try to throw scraps out...out of the house, contain any fruit in baggies or containers or fridge....fly traps.
Please share if you found any other good ways besides going Ninja with the swatter!

If you make a little cone/funnel type thing to fit into the top of a paper cup and put some wine in the cup it attracts them and they don't fly out, just get drunk and die.

Ok here is a story for ya.
I bought my house in the fall and was having people over for a housewarming party.  Well there was wood left over from the ones who left, I didn't know it was APPLE wood.  So I had 50+ people at my house, with all this food everywhere with fruit flies all over the place.  Needless to say no one ate anything.  It was a nightmare.  How embarrassing and gross.
I can laugh about it now but then, not so much.

I asked my hubby the other night (we do this hypothetical question thing to eachother to prove our love) if we were stranded on a mountain, and I died, would he eat me to stay alive. He said only in the good way so I could die happy.
Whats not to love about my man?   2funny.gif
Also, if we were both cheetah's , he would give me first bite of his kill. Now thats true love, and good eatin too!  idiot2.gif
