Jadesmom shamed me into joining the World Parrot Trust (you can too for only $20 a year) and part of the deal was their magazine Psittascene. Most recent issue had an interestging article by a pair of scientists at New Mexico State University who are doing a study of the genetic history of parrots. Pretty thick stuff but they posit that parrots broke off from other vird species between 80 and 90 million years ago. They feel that the oldest family of parrots are the kakapoos and keas of NewZealand followed by the cockatoos, the african parrots and then the south americans. This is just a preliminary report, can't wait to see the final one!
