Ok, here goes with the speech..

A few months ago I came to be invited as a member to this forum. I noticed immediately that it was far different than any I had seen before. The atmosphere here was light and fun and I knew this would be a nice place to have some laughs, learn new things and share a love of parrots with others. Little did I know then that BP was so much more than that. I soon came to realize that this was a place where not only a love for parrots was shared but also a bond between members who cared for one another. A place where lives intersect accross the miles on a daily basis. A place where people rally when hard times hit one another, standing beside you, supporting you just as a family would. I am so grateful to be a part of this forum. To care so much for people that I have never met and have them care for me is something that I cherish. Before coming to BP I was living a life of solitude if you will. Spending my days in a classroom and my nights in relative silence with only my son hearing my voice focused on making a future for ourselves. Now I have a place where I can come to share in the lives of others. I didn't realize how much my life was lacking the company of others. So I thank you BPMar and Dad for creating such a wonderful place to that is shared by many wonderful people. Everyday I know I can count on at least three things when coming here; that even on my worst day I will find myself smiling and laughing again, that I learn something new, that I will be touched by someones experience in their lives that day. What more could a girl ask for?  :)

In BP spolight tradition a little about me:

I was born in Norfolk, VA in 1975 to my parents Thomas an Barbara. Dad was in the Navy at the time so I instantly became a Navt Brat as they call them. We spent a couple of years in VA before Dad was transfered to Puerto Rico. One of my fondest memories of Puerto Rico is of all us neighborhood kids would run out to the end of the field that was behind the Naval housing until the train tracks appeared and wait for the train every afternoon. We knew what was coming down the tracks, a train full of sugar cane. Each day the workers riding atop the cane would through us each a piece and we would head back to our houses enjoying the sweet juices that came from the sugarcane. It's such a fond memory for me because something so simple as sugarcane became something so special for all of us children. I remember the bullfrogs being huge there too! My brother Neil came along in 1980 while we were still in Puerto Rico. Later that year we were back in VA until moving to NY state when I was 6. The rest of my childhood was spent in various cities in upstate NY. In 11th grade I got the chance to go to Boces and be in the horsecare program. Horses have been a passion of mine since I was a little girl and I was estatic to finally get the chance to be with them on an almost daily basis. I would spend my mornings at the Saratoga Raceway working with Standardbreds and my afternoons back at my H.S. Before the year was up I was hired on to work as a groom at the track and was allowed to work instead of attending the horsecare program with the other students. I remained at the harness track working my way up the ranks as one of the top grooms for 5yrs. It was a wonderful time in my life, I'll never forget my experiences there and the people who were part in shaping who I am today. I'll never forget a horse named Brendi Lobel either. She was the kindest, gentlest mare I have ever known. I would spend hours in her stall as she layed in the straw with my head resting on her neck as we discussed life together. I most likely would have spent my life working at the track had it not been for the trainers strike and lack of revenue due to low attendance by the public on race days. It was a hard time for every owner/trainer and the man I worked for found himself having to pack up and leave his racing days behind. I moved on as well, working with various different breeds of horses before becoming injured severly and deciding the next time a horse was going to injure me it would be my own. I began working in a boarding kennel for a year getting doggie experience behind my belt before moving on to a kennel in a veterinary practice. It was there that my love for not only animals grew, but my love for the veterinary side of the animal world. I was so facinated with surgeries, medical conditions, and treatments. I expressed my interest and was allowed to start working as a veterinary assistant. It wasn't long before I found myself with the title of Veterinary Technician on my badge. With each passing day my skills and knowledge of a VT improved. I remember being like a sponge and soaking up anything and everything I could about veterinary medicine. I'm sure the vets must have gotten tired of my constant quest for knowledge through questions. I spent 2 years at Saratoga Springs Veterinary Hospital before moving on to the Hernas Veterinary Clinic, it was closer to home for me and more pay so I made the switch. Little did I know it was there that I would experience some of the toughest moments in my VT career. Through a series of events I suffured PTSD. I spent the next year battling to retrieve my former self. I found most of her again, somethings were forever lost. In retriving myself I found a place called My Best Friends Wildlife Sanctuary where I became a volunteer. I was able to find a sense of peace again through the eyes of those who were once abused or neglected. During that time I began working again for a wonderful man who specialized in avian and wildlife medicine along with small animal medicine. My love for parrots quickly grew through my experiences with them. I had owned parakeets as a teenager but I really didn't have much knowledge on parrots back then. I found myself facinated with their behaviors, the variety of species and the medical conditions they could suffer from. I was amazed at what a bit of wire and a pin could do in healing a broken wing, even more so when flight was once again possible because of those wires and pins. In the time that I worked for Dr. Hartman I learned so much more that I thought was possible where veterinary medicine was concerned. We treated rats with cancer, egg bound snakes, monkeys with stress disorders, hedgehogs with skin disorders, ducks with metal posioning, birds with plucking issues, eagles and owls who had flown into utility poles and so much more. Though I loved my job, I began to feel the burnout that often comes with being a Vet Tech. The heartache of seeing patients lose their battles will illness became to much for me. It was time to move on. While searching through the want ads I found one that said "Teachers for Autistic children needed". The ad said nothing more about the job just a phone number and yet I was drawn to it. I called and filled out an application and was hired on after a couple of interviews. Though it was hard a first, learning the in's and out's on how to teach an autistic child to re-wire their brain so their world could open up so that things like language and speaking capabilities could become a part of their life. It was one of the most fufilling experieinces I have ever had. When you make a breaktrough with a child and hear their first ever spoken word pass through their lips at the age of 4 and see the joy in their eyes your heart just melts. My world changed once again when I found myself leaving NY and my world as I knew it behind to move to Nevada. My parents had moved here 2years prior and I missed having family around. I had been through some very tough times and tough relationships during the past 5yrs and I knew it was time for a change. So I decided to move here to be closer to my family. I wasn't sure if I would be happy here or not, but I knew I didn't want to find myself saying "what if" later on in life. I spent 2 years living in the Carson City area working as a Caregiver/Medtech at an assisted living facility. I soon came to love the elderly, everyday was different there and every resident had a story to tell. There was so much history contained within those walls.  Helping to make their days a little brighter as most did not have family not only helped them but helped me become a better person as well. During my 2yrs in the Carson area I came to finally live my dream of owning a Mustang horse. I was able to adopted a weanling Mustang on my 27th birthday from the BLM. I named him Legend, he was a beautifully colored buckskin with Zebra stripes on his legs, masking on his face and a dorsal stripe....a throwback to horses who once roamed the praries long, long ago. Together we formed a strong bond based on love and trust. He had never been touched by human hands before, when he allowed me that first touch it was as if we both melted into one another both giving so much of ourselves in an unknown world yet to be explored. Our journey together was amazing as he progressed in his training. He was so willing to learn, giving in against every instinct a wild horse has to run in the face of a human. When I learned I was pregnant and was going to be a single mom I knew I couldn't keep him. Baby and horse just were not possible given the circumstances. Having to sell him was one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make. I made sure he went to a wonderful home and last I heard he was doing wonderfully. A month after selling him I found myself where I am now in Vegas. I was suspose to marry his "sperm donor" as I call him and my parents did not want to miss out on seeing their first grandchild grow up so plans were made to move to Vegas because the "donor" lived in Vegas. When the engagement was called off things were already set in stone where the move was concerned so to Vegas we went. Of course there is more to the story (and other life experiences yet to be told, no one wants a whole life story all at once anyway  :D) but I'm realizing this is long winded as it is. I often times start writting and don't realize just how much I have written until it's too late  :-\ So to make a long story short I have been in Vegas for 4yrs now, trying to make not only a future for Caden and I but to make my way back to NY as well. I haven't been truly happy since moving here and I miss NY more than I can say. I want Caden to beable to experience all the great things I did as a child and adult in NY. At present time I am working towards getting my RN and trying my best to focus on what can be instead of what is. I've had to start my life over twice since coming here, the third time will be in NY!
