Well, let me tell you about my experience with the Oswego County Rescue. I was on CL, and saw a post from a woman who said she does rescue stuff about a half hour away from and would like any cages that were no longer being used. I had Jades old cage that needed to be refinished and emailed her and she said she refinishes them all the time. I then contacted the dog warden and the SPCA as I did not want to give to a breeder or a hoarder. They both assured me she was "wonderful woman who does a  lot of work" for both of them So I thought OK, I'll give her the cage. She invited me out to meet her flock.
I though, well this will be nice if I ever need someone in a hurry, its nice to have a local hook up. Well,  was very surprised at what I saw. She Had a grey, 2 zons, a macaw and a too as I walked in. They were not the cleanest, but OK.
Then she showed me her pair of eclectus. They had a nest box. When I asked her why a nest box, she said they laid an egg and she didn't want it getting broke...Hmmmmm...then showed me she had stuck a quaker egg in with the eclectus egg in hopes of it hatching as the mom had been killed by another of her birds. Hmmmmm again.
These were obviously breeder birds. Then told me the guy who surrendered them to her "Wants the first baby" First baby? I thought they weren't breeders. Hmmmmm  again. These guys were pretty dirty. Not good, getting worse. Then she takes me into her small bird room. Well, here's where it gets bad.
First she shows me a pair of lovebirds. With a breeder box. Mama had died so she had dad and daughter in there. Said one had killed the mom to th equaker egg with the eclectus. Hmmmm..Then a pair of caiques with , guess what , a breeder box. I asked again, why al the breeder boxes. She said they lik eto sleep in them. Hmmmmm Then showed me one parrolet. Was hoping to get it a friend. Hmmmm.. Then a tiel , only one , but a box in there too I believe. The partner had died. The room was filthy. An inch of poop on the floor and in the cages. She took her finger and wiped about an inch worth of crud between a couple of the bars and told me they would be cleaned good when her son gets out of school for the summer.
Not done yet, then she had a room with she had told me 6 quakes. She didn't take me in there, but went in and came back with one. It was screaming and biting her. She actually took her finger and hit it in the face. I asked her to please not do that, and she said he was used to it!!!!! Then she put him back..
At this point, I was appalled., and just wanted to get out. As I was leaving, she said that cage is in great shape. I said no its not, you said you were going to refinish it, and showed her where Jade had worn all th epaint off the inside of about 1/2 of the bars with th neurotic beak rubbing she did when I got her. She Said "it won't hurt them. " I said,"My vet said they could get heavy metal poisoning from that and it was good that the first thing I did when I got her was replace that cage. She said "oh. OK. I've been lucky and have never had to see a vet"  7  years, 18 fids in her house, a bunch that actually were rehomed, and you have never seen a vet? I left very upset but felt like there was little I could do.
Sh eemailed me and wanted to come to my house and meet my birds. Yeah, right.....
And now I see why the macaw I called about was not taken out of that abusive home. THis woman was recommended by the dog warden and the SPCA to me, and both gave her glowing references whe I asked about her. "Heart of gold, good bird keeper, does so much work for them, yada, yada, yada....."
The whole thing just makes me sick. Who else is thetre to turn to? No one....

Oh man! That's horrible...it sounds like she's a hoarder and a breeder! I can't believe the SPCA would give her such a good reference. Makes you wonder what's really going on at that SPCA  :-\ Might be a good idea to contact the head hancho and tell him/her of your experience with this woman and how she came so highly reccomended. I'm sorry you had to whitness all of that, you must have wanted to take every one of those birds away from her. Birds being killed by other birds, no vet ever, fithly conditions, breeding  tickedoff.gif The woman needs to be in jail for the obvious abuse to those birds. I think I would have hit her in the face like she did the quaker, no wonder why he bites! Did you end up giving her the cage in the end? I hope something can be done for them and they can get out of those awful conditions  :'(

There's plenty you can do...report this...these types of situations ruin it for all true rescues and needs to be stopped...
Now be patient with me....many folks say.."I am only one, what can I do?"....log onto craigslist and report what you have seen...even if your words are flagged...many will still see them.
Call animal protection...report this person...

there is much you can do...
Remember my words...

THERE IS NO GREATER WRONG THAN THE WRONG MADE BY A PERSON THAT DONE NOTHING, BECAUSE HE/SHE FELT THEY COULD DO SO LITTLE...

Animals will never gain help by such a wrong...

My heart is with you....always...
My strength is with you...always.
Stand up....BE HEARD....

Thank you for posting your findings...

Makes you wonder if they really do know her or have ever made a visit to her.  Maybe they need to give her a home visit!

number one I would call the humane society and dog warden and tell them your experience and what you saw, and that you are appalled they would recommend such a place.and that they should really check people out before they recommend them.

I agree with the advice the others have given you!  This is a "closet" breeder who hides behind the term "rescue" to get hand outs.  She also obviously is a breeder who cares little about her breeder birds as many seem to be dying in her care.  Disgusting!!!! >:(  She got good recommendations because there are still far to many who are not educated on all the aspects of care and issues concerning Parrots.  You have already helped just by posting this!  Do what you can and keep spreading the word and hopefully she is shut down! tickedoff.gif

I would call the SPCA & dog warden they may not have been to the house in a while and may not be aware of the curret conditions & do what BW suggested, maybe animalcop will have more ideas, good luck.

You know, I am so god damn mad.  tickedoff.gif tickedoff.gif tickedoff.gif The more I think about it. I can't reach them by phone today, but I just posted a copy of the email I sent. And you know jr, she actually asked me about SCBR. She said she had read stuff on CL about it and said "Just between you and me, what is the story." I don't even have to tell you guys what I said.  smitten.gif smitten.gif smitten.gif smitten.gif
This was before I actually met her. Now when I think back on that , I am livid.  tickedoff.gif

Lets stop this...its that easy...
When a law comes across your desk...to end parrots being kept as pets..SUPPORT THE LAW!

Its that plain...its that simple....

More and more rescue facilities are popping up...why?

Do ya really think by adding more rescues it will solve the problem?????????

Well....I have never abused my Parrot...why should I suffer....????????

YOU ARE THE FEW....THEY...THE PARROTS...ARE THE MANY.........

Put your selfish rights and freedom behind you!
I know and understand your love and dedication for your birds....what about there love for the skies?
What about there love to find there own mate?
What about there RIGHT to be free?

Many folks that take good care of there birds...know this....your birds will out live you....
So put your ability to get your hands on more Parrots in the future behind you!

Parrots as pets simply is not working...just how much proof does a person need?

As another Parrot is added to the endangered list...doesn't this open thy eye's....?

We tear down there tree's...destroy there homelands...isn't this enough?

What is happening to them you surely would not wish to be done to YOU!

Bottom Line!!!!!!!

Hey BW, I agree 100%. I do not support having these guys as pets, I have them because they had nowhere else to go. They were unwanted and discarded. I will support any law that stops the breeding and importing of these animals, my only concern is what happens to the ones that are already here. I will not support euthanizing an animal for the sake of any law. What would you do if you were told you had to euthanize all of your birds today because you cannot have them as pets. What about the good rescues that are out there now that would no longer be able to find loving homes for the birds they currrently have. No rescue can survive if they cannot find homes for the birds that are now unwanted. What happens to them? I have so many mixed feelings about these laws, I do hope you can understand my feelings on this, I know you have your reasons for wanting these laws passed as do I, but I will not kill my birds for that to happen. There has to be a happy medium somewhere. When all birds that are currently in captivity have passed I will no longer own one as there will no longer be unwanted and discarded birds that need my care and love. I will only have rescued birds as they are the ones that need a home now.

Even the people who drafted this bill state there are serious shortcomings with it . Last I read, it was in a state of revision. Lets hope the new draft takes care of the fids that are already here as pets, at rescues, and in need of help, as well as barring any further imports.  In a perfect world, none of us would want fids as caged pets, but unfortunately, at the present time, it is the lesser of 2 evils when you consider the alternitives. JMHO...

I wonder if that is the same rescue I had written to after I had decided to adopt after Maggie died...and before I had written to Chance. I have to say I did not get a 'warm fuzzie' from the person in fact she turned me off and I knew I would have no further contact with that place. Just disgusting that she is being recommended!!!
