I wrote this for Chance in the hopes it will help to bring more awareness to her rescue. I thought I would share it with all of you. I'm sending it to newspapers, radio stations and such in her area. I'm also going to try and get it published in a few bird publications as well as the New York Times.

                                                       A Hero in Need

There is a place called Second Chance Bird Rescue in Rochester, New York where you will find a hero. Barb runs the rescue for abused and neglected parrots full-time. While she does have volunteers, the're aren’t near enough of them and she can be found by a parrot’s side throughout the day. Barb has put many years into running the rescue all in an effort to rehabilitate parrots with health problems and behavior issues due to neglectful or abusive owners. She puts everything she has into saving these birds. There are some parrots that will have a forever home at SCBR, while some others are adoptable to qualified candidates. She even runs a sponsorship program for the parrots. Currently she is fighting hard to save the life of a 2yr old Congo African Grey parrot who is suffering from seizures. Things are still in the diagnosis stage and even though there are so many unknowns as to what is causing Louie’s seizures she does not give up, she does not falter. When Louie is having a seizure she is right there by his side helping him to get through. She asks nothing in return, she only knows she can’t give up the fight when Louie himself fights so hard and still greats her will “hellos” and kisses. Louie is not the only parrot that Barb has gone above and beyond for. Braveheart was another Congo African Grey who was left without any toes when he came into her care. This would have deterred many from taking him in as a toeless bird can present many problems in care. Barb didn’t even think twice, she took Braveheart in and provided him with a wonderful life. He learned to adapt and got around quite well, playing toss was a favorite activity. Braveheart has left this world, in doing so he has left behind a legacy of hope and inspiration. Every bird in Barb’s care is shown love and compassion while they are getting their second chance.
With all the love and compassion that Barb has given to the birds in her care it has left her ill with Bird Keepers Lung, even though this disease may one day claim her life she does not let it stop her. She continues just as she always has, for her passion for these birds runs deep. She is able to provide stability to parrots that would otherwise suffer in life. When she takes in a rescue she asks not why, she just say’s yes and gives the parrot a second chance at life. After living a life of hardships it must be wonderful for a parrot that arrives at SCBR for a new start that comes with hope, love and trust.
Today Barb is struggling to keep Second Chance Bird Rescue running. Donations are no longer coming through the door; sponsorships have gone by the wayside. It seems as if people have forgotten that SCBR is a non-profit organization whose very well being depends on donations. Without donations coming in and Louie’s medical bills, funds are running very low. Be sure that Barb will do all she can, she will sacrifice in an instant to make sure these birds have a home. Barb truly is a hero; she puts so much of herself into SCBR. If there is a bird in need, she is there. She goes about her life’s mission of saving parrots no matter the circumstance. Her heart, determination, loyalty and understanding for these parrots never falters, she does so because she wouldn’t have it any other way. Her struggles to keep SCBR going are often almost too much to bear, and yet she is right there steady as ever.
By now you may be thinking how is it that this hero is in need? There is need because donations have come to a standstill. Her monthly expenses to keep the birds happy and healthy are ever in the forefront. Barb puts so much of herself into rescuing these birds and does not ask anything in return. Her actions do not go unnoticed, she sees the difference she makes everyday in the happiness and progress of the abused and neglected birds that she has taken in under her wing. With today’s financial situation things are looking bleak. SCBR is in dire need of some funding. If things keep going the way they are the doors may close despite Barb’s best efforts. This will be a sad fate indeed and these birds will have no one else to turn to if Barb is unable to keep them happy and safe. Countless birds are turned over to rescues each year, you can be sure there will be more coming through the doors of Second Chance Bird Rescue this year. If they are to be assured a happy, safe home the doors of SCBR must remain open.
One way to keep the doors open is through donations. You may be asking yourself how you can help. You can help by donating any amount you can spare, even as little as five dollars helps feed those in need. You can also donate toys for the birds to take some one the financial strain off of SCBR. Birds need stimulation and enrichment and one of the ways they get that is through toys they can chew and play with. Barb could also use things that we take for granted like towels and cleaning supplies. SCBR depends on your help to keep the doors open. If you are moved by Barb’s story, have a special place in your heart for birds or just feel like you should do something please give what you can when you can. Even if everyone gave just a small amount it would go a long way to helping the rescue. So let’s all join together and help a hero keep the doors open to this rescue of the parrot world.

It's what I am able to do for now from here. I wish I could be there helping out at the rescue, but those pesky 3000 miles between us put a stop to it. I wish I could do more and I'm sure that someday I will  :)Thus far I have sent this in to 2 Rochester area newspapers, News 10 in Rochester and the New York Times. I've got some more searching to do and plan to get it out accross NY if I can. I'm also going to submit to USA Today. No news yet on whether someone is going to publish it or not, someones got to somewhere though!

Just a quick update as to where else I've sent this. News 13, NY Daily News, USA Today, a local radio station and Bird Talk magazine. I realize the chances of BT publishing this are slim, but at least someone there will read it. If anyone can think of anywhere else that might publish this please let me know and I'll send it their way. If anyone can give me links to their local newspapers that would be great, if this can get out accross the country I think there is more of a chance.

Chance~ Could you give me a few statistics for the phonecall on Monday, ie: when you opened, monthly expenses, how many bird you have there, those sorts of things? Oh, and I'm thinking it will help to have your last name as well  ;)

Dad~ Thanks for the link  :), I submitted it to them as well.

“My brother and sister birds, you should praise your Creator and always love him: He gave you feathers for clothes, wings to fly and all other things that you need. It is God who made you noble among all creatures, making your home in thin, pure air. Without sowing or reaping, you receive God’s guidance and protection.”
