It was Africa VS South America! And it didn't end pretty!

Sorry I have been MIA for a few days guys. It's been a hectic week. Savannah bit Quincy's toe on Saturday and I've been to the vet twice with my poor little buddy and now he is in a collar. No fun! Below is my blog post on what happened.

http://sweetparrots.blogspot.com/2015/05/my-quincy-is-injured.html

He is doing well and I am feeling a lot better and less stressed about the whole thing. Just glad he is finally getting better! We go back on Tuesday when I take Coqui for her annual check up. I just love the new vet we found last year for my guys. I managed to get a picture of him putting Quincy's collar on yesterday. You will see it on my blog.

Awwwwww, sorry Quincy got bit. Thing like this always seem to happen during a long weekend, or on a holiday. I'm happy everything is under control, that Quincy is doing well with the collar, and that you found a great vet.    This could have been a much worse accident, which is a fear of mine with our birds (a fear we all share, I'm sure).

I am in the process of looking for another avian vet, I love ours but she has refused to see us in two emergencies in which I have lost an animal and a bird this year, and another bird a couple of years back, seems her private life is more important to her & after yesterday I will be saying something to the office when I go in. The office is FANTASTIC with dogs and cats, but they need another vet that can take care of birds and other exotics in an emergency, even if that means transporting them to another vet if they need to stay overnight. To have pets die because "it's not her night to work emergencies" is BS, especially when they are only on call once a week for emergencies!! (sorry, didn't mean to take over your post)   2sadk

That's awful Sondra . Ive run into the same problem here. You know if theirs signs of illness their isn't much time. That's why I just head to Cornell . They have 24 hr care. I don't think vets should even say they take birds .If their not going to  be available for them.

I was given 2 numbers to places that "do" birds by my vet office, I called but they couldn't get me in for another 4 hours. We all know that an emergency with a bird means they need to be seen immediately. How can the ONLY avian vet in a practice be on call only one night a week for emergencies? She is on call 3 times a month because of the number of other vets in the practice and she is the only one who does birds and exotics. Any other avian vet is well over just under an hour and a half away, totally useless in a true emergency. I was told years ago that all bird owners should learn basic bird first aid and how to give IV fluids to our birds, now I'm thinking they were correct, this way at least we could stabilize them until we could travel the miles to a vet. With what we as bird owners are charged for a complete check up (this include bloodwork) these vets should be available 24/7, seriously, over 600 dollars for our Too just for bloodwork, 500 for our Grey, and 350 for our Conure, plus office visit, and equipment. Not to mention meds if they are needed. I found an excellent vet who "did" birds, but she moved 2 hours away and is with an emergency hospital so now we are talking 150 dollars to just walk in the doors plus every test is higher.

I am so happy you found a vet to help you, you might want to check them out, especially if they "can get someone to come in". They sound like the type of place I'd switch to because most vets today will video conference once a week with other vets on cases, so you will get better care if they aren't sure on something. Go check them out for a well bird check. I am also happy that Quicny is doing well, and that Savannah was just being a bit "nippy". This weather has all our birds acting up, mother nature needs to just settle down.  wink1

I do apologize for high-jacking your thread. The only excuse is I am PISSED!!   :hair:

WOW!! $170.00 is GREAT!! does that include a full blood work-up??  If it is, it would be worth my time and money to drive to see him, way less expensive than where I go!! I need to get our U2 a full blood work up at least every 5 years, at the longest, as he has an unusually small liver. Our vet wants the bloodwork every year, but I simply can't afford it. I was getting bloodwork every third year up until I lost my job 5 years ago. They are due now that I have a good job again, it's just too expensive right now.

for an office visit it's about 42 dollars here, if the use ANYTHING at all the charge increases, bandage change, irrigate a wound, suture removal is free after a "surgery", a blood draw or a  shot is whatever is given plus a 2 dollar syringe disposal fee.  Our Vets are really fantastic as far as care goes & if you have a senior they will charge you less if you have trouble paying most of the time, it's just the darn exotic/avian vet I have a real problem with.
