For those of you who don't know me or my flock...I'm introducing my newest addition Fenix.
Fenix is a bird I rescued out of a pretty horrible home. When I first brought him into my flock I wanted to believe that the previous owners acted the way they told me...they said they took the best care of him they could, as they didn't know much about conures other than a book they bought when they bought Fenix.
Since he's been in my flock I'm starting to doubt some of what they said. He has some habits that lead me to believe maybe they weren't telling the whole truth...
1. I have NO IDEA what they fed him, but I'm gonna bet it was A TON of people food (and I don't mean good stuff). He freaks out ANY time my roommate or I eat food anywhere near him. He begins screaming and more or less begging for whatever it is we are eating. It doesn't matter what it is.
2. I believe that he has been physically abused in his past. I know how animals react to being hit (as I've been around abused animals before) and its completely different than just being hand shy.
But to a more positive note....
When he first came to be in my flock, he was not a bird. I mean technically yes he was...but other than that you wouldn't know it. All he did was sit on his perch, eat and poop. He never climbed anywhere, played with any toys, nothing a "normal" bird would do.
Now he is the most active bird I've ever seen. (He puts my Sun Conure to shame!) He is constantly bathing, playing, climbing, you know doing what birds do best aka getting into mischief.
When he first came to be in my flock all he had for feathers on his chest were little grey downy feathers (pic #1). He has greatly overcome this feather picking business! (pic #2 is a few weeks after he came into my flock, and pic #3 is from earlier this week) I'm so proud of him. We still have a long way to go, but he is making leaps and bounds of progress.
