I read a sad story of this girl losing 3 of her 5 birds. She had been canning every year and this year decided to do pickles. The heated up vinegar creates a toxic fume [that killed her birds ] . Im so glad Im aware of that [and sorry for her  2sadk]

Never heard of vinegar fumes killing or making birds sick. I have however heard about people using non-stick pans & their birds dieing or getting quite ill, even when using for long periods of time to keep something boiling they are dangerous.

Wow, that is sad indeed!  sadboy3 I didn't know this, but I can certainly understand how it could be that dangerous. I can't stand the smell of fresh cold vinegar even tho it is good for cleaning some things. So I can just imagine how irritating the heated version would be.  sadbigeye

I don't can anything, tried some apricot preserves way back in the dark ages (1980s) and couldn't get the lids to seal. Ended up with way too many jars of the stuff I had to keep in the fridge til it was used up & we don't use it very often. I decided right then that it was much easier & cheaper for us to just buy jam.  roll
