Very beautiful indeed! I have heard of them and seen a photo. Clearly not one seen or heard of often in private collections.

Actually, they aren't THAT uncommon. You can find them somewhat regularly and at reasonable prices. That picture is highly touched up

They ARE uncommon in the average home and flock! I have seen them for sale on CL maybe once in a year or so. But when you see folks on forums telling about their birds, you rarely see one in Amazon collections!

I guess we are using 2 different definitions for uncommon then. The average bird owner doesn't know what subspecies their bird might be if it is from a species which has subspecies. Heck, most bird owners can't tell you what the parents of their hybrid were, or what their bird's natural habitat is beyond "Australia" or "The Amazon". If they don't want to know all about their bird, that's fine too. I would also venture to say that people holding the rarest species would definitely not be discussing them in a bird forum for security's sake. With very little time or effort, I was able to find 2 tame Lilacines for sale as well as several pairs without contacting a single breeder. If I tried that with a Blue Eyed Cockatoo, Buffon's Macaw, Red Tailed Black Cockatoo, Malabar Parakeet, or Blue Cheeked Amazon, the results would be different. Those are what I would define as uncommon to rare in American Aviculture.

They are definitely rare here in the UK. I have had a look on all our bird sites and breeders of Amazon websites. This has shown no results! They do have a pair in one of our zoos, but they are not for sale!
The only ones I have found are overseas and these are all breeding pairs :(

Fair enough Wendy, but you have access to Blue Throated Conures, and perhaps some Horned Parakeets

Ah yes, Blue Throated Conures are quite easy to come by over here. I will have to have a look at Horned Parakeets as I am not familiar with these. Blue Throated Macaws are also easy to come by over here, I am not sure if this is the case in the USA?

Blue Throated Macaws will soon be hard to come by in the few states they are bred and sold in. The majority of the breeders have decided to not continue to breed them for sale since the Endangered Species Act put them on the Cites I list last year in November. When the FWSD (Fish & Wildlife Dept.) passed this act it stopped interstate sales.
Many of the breeders have hit a dead zone in sales within their states which has brought the once mid-range higher end price of the BTM to not much more than a Green Wing costs. This Cites I listing the BTM is under now still allows them to be bought and sold, but only to legal residents of the state the BTM was hatched in. A legally obtained BTM is still allowed interstate travel within the US for recreational purposes with their owners as long as said travel is not to sell or give the bird(s) to someone. Special permits can be obtained by individuals for interstate sales to purchase BTMs for breeding purposes but only by certified government approved breeders. At the present time the government is not issuing any of these permits.
