I made a similar toy but instead of putting it on string I tied a whole bunch of pieces around a birdie bagel. Or course...Cleo loved it so much that she sat it in all the time and now it's covered in poop. haha. I have a metal ring I've been meaning to remake it with that way you can wash it.
