God, Doug has been getting on my nerves lately !

"Psittacine Aviculture, Perspectives, Techniques, and Research" by Richard M. Schubot, Kevin J Clubb, Susan L. Clubb, DVM
First, Richard Schubot is the owner and founder of the Avicultural Breeding and Research Center in Loxahatchee, FL. Kevin Clubb created the Certified Aviculturist programs for the American Federation of Aviculture. His wife, Susan, has written and co-written several articles and books on the topic of keeping parrots. While this text is directed to the bird breeder, it is a treasure rtrove of information for all.

The ABRC was founded to not only breed birds for the pet trade, but to also gather and hold significant numbers of rare and endangered species for conservation and reintroduction efforts. Extensive record keeping (Each individual is thoroughly documented from the date the egg was laid) creates a data stream unparalleled in aviculture. This data stram goes back to the mid 80's. The book is presented in an academic format complete with outside references noted if used extrapolating data for many different species ranging from reproductive span and productivity to average hematology values for different species. The center is able to do side by side studies with a respectable sample number on the efficacy of supplements on several different benchmarks to determine if there is any verifiable benefit to the administration of the supplement. It also includes dosage studies for medications as well as indications and most effective delivery methods. A whole chapter is devoted to Sarcocystosis. This book definitely needs to be in everyone's collection, breeder or not.

The list on medications can be used as foreknowledge when speaking to a vet. For instance, if a drug is prescribed at what seems to be a high dose, ask questions. Keep in mind that one of the authors is an avian vet. A well informed parront can prevent mishaps by being armed with knowledge. There is a book that I have seen, "The Second Hand Parrot" that might be worth a look
