Well, Violet started plucking her chest this spring. After a trip to the vet, he said it was because she was overweight. She has always been a bit portly, but that has been since the day I got her. He suggested separate cages and a lower quality bird seed ( more white millet than red) to put her on a reduced calorie diet. She was absolutely heartbroken being separated from her lover boy Pixie, so I never did follow through. My guts told me that wasn't it anyway. The budgie cage has been a hot bed of hormones that are finally calming down,, and look at Vi. She had been totally bald on her entire chest area. This is wonderful. My little chirpy fuzz muffin. Its a bit hard to see, but her whole chest is covered in fluff.

Good for you on not separating them! I can understand if it was like threatening, but the added stress of being separated when they are bonded just isn't going to help them. She looks wonderful!

To help her a bit during her next hormonal surge, keep her room darker longer (last one up & first to bed) and cut back on the amount of food available. If you normally give 6 tablespoons of food, cut back to 4 plus a bit. She won't starve, she will not throw as much around and it will either delay the hormones or cut them out  entirely as birds won't cycle if there isn't an abundance of food readily available.

Definitely seems broody. A frustrated broody hen will either pluck or shed chest feathers. Control food, lighting, and bathing ( all things that bring them into condition)

Thanks all. It means a lot that you all think I made the right decision.  hugu  She is a sweet little thing. I couldn't stand seeing her so sad. She has been bonded to Pixie since the day I got them. I did cut back on lighting and took away the nice fattening millet treats. And I think thats why I never had eggs, just her nesty behaviors.
