Chico will have to go in again for another beak trim. He went 3 weeks ago and they had an emergency at the vets at the time and took Chico in without us and I don't think they got it trimmed enough. There are 2 sharp edges I am hoping he will smooth down himself but it is looking scissory still so the poor guy will have to go in again. Any advice out there on this....do you think we could be taught to do this on our own if it is going to be a continual thing? :-\

At Gulf World we had a B&G that had a scissor beak and needed regular maintenance. My boss would do it, we helped. Just towel bird like your doing a nail trim and he would put a small dowel in the birds mouth and then use a dremal to do the filing. Just take your time and be careful not to let it get hot. Is Chico a bird that you can handle well enough to do this? Or will your vet show you how to do it?

Now that I am thinking I don't know if I would want to trim his beak myself, I am sure I could be taught to do it but...I don't know. I was going to see if there is somewhere to take him a little closer. Our vet is great and we will continue to go there for them but if there was someone reputable for the beak trim that was a little closer. I think I would be more comfortable with a bigger beak!

I was wondering, is there some kind of stone or block you could get him to "hone" his beak with, maybe he would do it for himself? What about one of those things you get for pet rodents? Though I'd ask a vet first. :)

You name it, they've got it. He did file it down himself last time, he had a few kink of jagged parts. They had an emergency when we had been there which I totally understand but will bring it up. Right now it is very scissory so I will get him an appointment soon. Thanks for the ideas!

Yeah, they had an emergency and I think they had an assistant do his beak. I hate to say it, but it was a horrible job! Now gotta do it again so soon! In the summer it is not so bad, but the winter driving all the way there is a pain. I might look to someone closer, just for the beak trims Chico so often needs. We are blessed with many great avian vets and groomers here, so all should be good. ;)

I've done Tuki's myself but only because shes easy to handle and I did Carters myself a couple times because I could not afford to take him every other week like he needed. But my groomer taught me how to do it to save me money and supervised the first time I did it, so that helped out a lot to make me comfortable enough to do it. When tukis gets bad again Ill take her in this time, I just do the little maintnence clips on her..get that little sharp point off the side for her.

I trim Junebugs beak ever since the "accident". I do it as Zimbas mom suggested and the vet taught me how to do it. I'll tell ya what though when Lacey goes for her check up after I adopt her in March Im going to have them file down her spikes. Ladyhawk suggested this to me said if we get pegged by her atleast it wont feel like a pit bull with the spikes filed down

It's actually not hard at all once you get the hang of it. Although I haven't trimmed beaks yet, they can't be much different than nails (well obviously they're different, but not THAT much). The bird groomer I used to go to would put a piece of leather in the bird's mouth so that their toung was under it and therefore out of the way. It also gave them something to release aggression onto when they were being trimmed. Good luck!
