As usual I checked my birdies in the morning yesterday. I was shocked to see Audi, cockatiel sitting at the bottom of the cage crying out. I quickly took her out and placed on my palm. She could hardly move. She looked weak and her eyes were closed. She had laid two eggs since saturday and I suspected she could be suffering from egg binding. It was 7am then. I called up a friend who breeds cockatiels. I told him about the symptoms and he concluded it was egg binding. He couldn't help me as he didn't know how to treat egg binding. On checking the net, Audi displayed all the symptoms of egg binding. My wife and I felt so sad. I called another friend who breeds cockatiel too. She suggested a vet to me. This vet stays not too far away from my house and he was a retired vet of our National Zoo.

It was 8.30am. I quickly made a call to the vet. He said he would only be back at 8.30pm as he had to lecture at a university. He told me to go to his house to collect some vitamins from his servant after telling him about audi's condition. I reached his house at 9.30am and on reaching home I quickly fed Audi as directed by him.

After 2 doses, Audi made some recovery. She looked much better after the 3rd dose. She could fly and perch on my finger. I called the vet after dinner and he told me to bring Audi to see him at 9pm. On checking Audi, he said it wasn't egg binding. She looked undernourished, lacking in vital nutrients. I agreed with him as my tiels are quite picky eaters.
Audi's feces turned out ok. He recommended me some nutrients in powder form. There were 4-5 of them and he mixed all of them and sold them in loose form. He said this was his formulation.

Whatever it was whether it was egg binding or not, Audi was back to normal this morning. On checking the nest box, there's one new egg.

Oh, so glad to hear Audi is feeling much better. Maybe she will be a good girl & eat her good stuff so she won't do this to her Daddy anymore.  hmm

Scary for you for sure! :deer:

cwy I hope Audi is still doing well.  Will they eat some hard boiled eggs with the shells?  It is very scary and that is unfortunately how we lost our Miah.  I know Audi is in good hands and keep us posted!

egg binding is not only caused by calcium deficiency but nutrition as whole. My tiels in the aviary had no problem laying eggs in spite they were not eating a good diet as the tiels at home. I have a minerals block for them to chew. Unfortunately the mineral block is no longer available and I couldn't get one for Audi. Minerals deficiency is common in natural food due to soil depletion of minerals. Thus supplementation is very important. I bought a multi minerals supplement from the vet.

Audi is back to normal now. Getting her to eat mash food is difficult since I separated her and her mate from the flock. At the moment I am syringe feeding her multi vitamins and calcium syrups. I am adding milk minerals to their food as well.

thanks for your concern.

I was sceptical when the vet prescribed me 2bottles of vitamins. I thought what the heck can the vitamins do in a few hours to save the life of Audi. From what I read egg binding can kill the bird within hours.
