caleb is doing well with his meds. i mix the antibiotic with some apple/carrot babyfood and spoon feed it to him. he loves it! Then i give him the stainless steel condiment cup and the plastic spoon that i mixed it in/with and he licks 'em clean and plays with 'em. As you said, ditty, the meloxicam is no problem at all. i just offer the syringe and he goes right for it. The mixing babyfood is a double bonus, since he needs extra vitamin A in his diet, i think. I offered a spoon of just the babyfood to the other fids and twiggy took a taste and ran away from the spoon chastizing it.  dmblaf  skittles took a taste and shook his head so hard babyfood flew in the KITCHEN!.  slaph  Ollie looked at it confused and i acted like i took a taste and he looked at it and said "cracker??" i told him "yes! its yummy cracker!" he took a taste and looked at it like  hmm  Marley LOVED it....go figure. marley and 'mikey' have alot in common.  lol

***dont know who mikey is??? humph!   slaph  young'uns. he was the life cereal kid :  "give it to mikey, he'll eat anything!"

update on caleb's wound: well monday evening it was actually bleeding. he definitely picked a spot. i got it to stop fairly easily, tho. then this morning the hard scab is gone. he must've been picking at it.  his jacket came in from avian fashions but it is MUCH too small. Not too sure how big they think a moluccan cockatoo IS but that jacket looks about right for maybe Rodney.  dknow  BUT with the bfd in question still, i dont want to return it. i dont want to run the risk of endangering anyone else's fids. So today i'm going to see how hard it will be for me to make him a t'shirt.

QUESTION: Assuming i can make a little t'shirt. i'm thinking i can make a little something with some fleece i have and secure it round his neck and 'waist' with velcro. My instincts tell me its not safe to leave him in it when i'm not with him. would ya'll agree with that? Ditty, you said that at one time you had yoshi in an elizabethan collar...that was for ONLY when you were home, right? or did they expect you to leave it on him 24/7?

the vet called to tell me the bill is in for the PBFD test (but not the results)  sadboy3

I have been reading more on the PBFD. I just dont think Caleb has the symptoms that raise red flags.  dknow  I'm not adverse to running the test. But i dont see anything that would really make me go  bugeye  oh no! Tho the Cockatoos are particularly at risk. He really has alot more powder down that the example birds i saw on the net. He has PLENTY of powder down feathers. he doesnt have the shiney black beak (as opposed to a proper grey/black dusty beak...which he has) His feathers dont have that 'withered' look to 'em.  I DID find that birds over the age of 3 are more resistant to the disease.  Depending on how much they are contaminated. (ie: even a healty 10yr old would eventually get it if he were constantly surrounded by the disease and good husbandry wasnt followed where-as the same bird just exposed in passing would be likely to resist the virus. ) oh well, just making myself feel better, i guess.  dknow

 thinkin3  <--- me waiting for results. <sigh>

I have been counting down the days to R-Day too!!!  scared1  he does not seem sick enough to have it, I wonder what his symptoms mean???

i am sad to hear he is picking :( there has to be a way to sew some fabric on the front, or elastic or something.. if the test is neg, I do not see a reason you cannot return it.

have you tried the rose water and glycerine (i think?) thing yet?

i am thinking positively with ya  happyjack

Tozie, A sweatshirt cuff will make a good sweater for a smaller bird, but a sleeve with the cuff attached makes a good sweater. No velcro needed, just tie it.

Birds will pull off scabs on themselves. Contact M2Mom at for a pattern for a sweater.  http://www.secondchancebirds.net/forum/

M2Mom has tons of experience with sweaters and holes in the chest, she may even suggest a chest plate for him and tell you how to make one. He's still gonna pluck the sweater, and once he figures out how to put a hole in it he'll go right back to digging into his hole.

well, last nite before bed i was looking at caleb's wound. it used to be a perfect shape of a thumbprint. Well, its definitely not anymore. its seems to actually be healing.  handshappy  its slow going but hey, if it just heals a bit every couple weeks it'll eventually close up. he has some blood feathers coming in, in that area, i've been watching them closely. Some of it is just never gonna grow feathers, its pure scar-tissue. but that's not a problem for me.

Awesome! I bet it heals and he stops plucking entirely over time! You have that special thing with birds and it will be what "heals" him entirely.  loveuk
