:deer: I was awoken to the Lovies cheepin about.  At first I thought they were squabbling but it wasn't.  I turned the light on low, uncovered them and talked...they kept squawking for a while which then got Kito going.  I "clucked" to him, he clucked back.  He was ok but looked on high alert.  Luckily the rest stayed calm.  Who knows what spooked them dknow  Through it all, the cutest thing....Julio whispering from beneath his cover...."Issssss ok!"   loveuk

We can only speculate about those nasty frights. Could have been a resident "orb" just passing through. *snicker

 laffhrd Orb!
Who knows what it was, hope they don't get too cranky from being up so early!
One thing a lot of them have been doing is knocking their swings down!  Don't recall it this am, but last night one of the Conure boys did, at least I think it was last night! slaph

its strange, everybody speaks of night frights and i have never had that with my fids. what exactly do they do? my fids are in my room at night until mid morning as thats where i feel the safest with them. i dont hear any wing flapping or scared noises at all. is this maybe caused because they are covered? my fids arent covered and i have a nightlight on. could that be why they dont have these night frights?
mar, i am glad nobody is hurt. aww little julio was just trying to help calm them all down.  loveuk

They can start flapping around, flying and squawking.....spooked.  They always have night lights and brought up with being covered.  When they are covered at night they all calm down and are quiet.  There are parts where they can see out so not totally covered.  The demon bird can be really cute at times, looking out for his flock and he is one of the biggest scaredy cats!

Yes, even though we have this on rare occasions this can be dangerous.  The "flight" mode of their prey instincts kicks in when spooked and when in a cage or house can fly into bars, walls etc and be injured.  This is why it is important to have some lighting in their sleeping area.  It helps them to see potential predators (helps to prevent frights) and cage bars, walls etc that they might otherwise fly into if spooked.

my house is never completely dark between streetlights, nitelights and tv's. neither me nor the fids nor the dogs appreciate pitch blackness. i can walk through my house and see fairly well in every room. i've had nite fright one time with steve (my first tiel) but that's it.( knock on wood)

The important thing to remember with a night fright/ nightmare is to do just what Mar di, talk to your bird until they wake up. NEVER stick your hand into a cage until they are fully awake even if they are injured because even the smallest, most gentle bird can inflict damage when going through one of these. If you turn on an overhead light you must leave it on so night lights are recommended. You leave on any light you turn on so that they don't have a repeat session.

Our tiels have them as does our U2! It can be scary to watch, but it must be awful for them.
