Animal Cruelty during Upstate NY floods by PETCO

I would like to bring attention to the story currently developing in upstate New York's Johnson City, one of those majorly affected by the recent floods. In the city, the popular pet store PETCO failed to evacuate any of the animals in the store, even though over 4 feet of water poured into the store and surrounding area. Some of these animals have since perished, being secluded in the water and left to drown or die of hunger, for 3 days. PETCO has released a statement which claims that the company was mislead by city officials when it came to where evacuation were necessary, and that they were not aware that the store was in danger of flooding. I would like everyone to know, as a person living in this city who is very aware of the flood situation, that this is not the case. The store is located in a zone that was under mandatory evacuation, and has flooded before during the 2006 disaster. This is a cop-out, and the true safety of the animals was not a concern for this company. They need to be brought to justice, please investigate and bring this case to the public!

ya know, i've seen and heard issue after issue by petco about poor animal care. if it was just one store i'd say okay, its a bad store manager. but i've seen it too much across the country. i'm done with them.  i know, my little dime wont hurt them a bit. but maybe if more people follow and quit doing business with them, they'll either close up shop or change their ways.

i think these chain stores need to quit carrying animals. big business and living creatures who cant speak for themselves dont mix.

where are the animal welfare agents? if any joe blow did this they would be jailed or fined.. those poor things must have been sooo scared.

It IS an outrage!  WTH is wrong with them.  If I worked there I could not live with myself knowing I left them there alone.

petco is known for it's animal abuse which is THE reason I won't shop their stores. If any animal is sick it's usually put in the freezer UNLESS the "on call vet" doesn't charge or only charges a very small fee. The only animals that get decent vet care, again expense does matter, are the dogs. Birds, hammys, & GPs are routinely tossed in the freezer or garbage dumpster. This is fact, check out the videos on U-tube.

i only go to our petco about 6 or 7 times a year for clearence items. i have reported our store on several occasions and the manager did nothing so i went as far above him as i could. now when i go in there things look much better because they know i will call coporate again. petsmart here is soooooo much better to their pets. they just opened in march of 09 the place is spotless and pets are healthy,have lots of toys and cages are always nice and clean. they take time to play with the animals and it shows because when we go in there i like to play with the ratties and they are so nice where as petco rats arent played with.

the poor animals at this ny petco,i cant believe a human could live with themselves knowing the pets would die. thats why i couldnt work at a pet store because i would be one of very few that would take a risk in their own lives to save a hamster or a bird,heck i would even rescue a fish if i had to. i sometimes wonder if certain places hire those people who dont give a rats behind about animals and they just have to pretend they do. i know for sure our petsmart hired people who care and know what they need and whats best for them. sometimes they wont sell a pet to somebody they dont think is going to take care of them. i also like the fact that all small animals are one sex so they dont have babies and most people wont go in there for breeder animals because the prices on their pets is higher.
