Title: Avian straight jacket
Post by: Debz on January 09, 2011, 07:47:20 pm
Gasp!   :bugeye:
Actually, I would like to see how this goes on a fid and how well it fits the bird.  Did anyone know these where out there?

They have been around for years. They are awesome for someone whose birds are not trained to take meds, one person can do it no problem & they are great at the vets when blood and other invasive tests need to be done. It actually protects the birds from hurting themselves or being hurt when at the vets.

how does it go on?  I would think putting it on zuri like at the vet say would be more trouble than it is worth.

I can totally see them hurting themself, remember Zuri puncuting her own wingy? :2sadk:

restraining for administering meds.  I would like to see how it goes on and how different is it from a towel?

i could see a use for meds and such but all the years i spent as a tech we always just used a towel. i dunno...just seems easier to use a towel versus having to adjust something to make it fit or having everything just so to make it fit. seems like it would create more stress than a towel which you can cover their head with too if need be to help calm them.

same here.
Have you guys seen the infomercial on the ideal spaghetti maker contraption. They show a poor housewife in distress over which pot to use, getting burned  and fatigue over the hot steam. What is a poor simpleminded housewife to do? :dknow:   Who will save today's idiot?
Sound the trumpets bring in the revolutionary "pasta Boat"

Scary thing is it got 5 stars.  :slaph:

With a towel it's a bit difficult to get to certain areas of the body and usually two people are needed to do most anything - one to hold the bird and the other to administer meds, or find the vent, etc.
With this item you can put it on one handed and one person can do whatever is needed doing - you don't need two sets of hands. A while back I saw a video of them putting it on and it goes on easy, and only cinches so far because you buy for the size bird you have. Imagine trimming nails without needing two people, one to hold the bird, keeping the head covered, the towel held tight enough so the bird can't get wings out, search for feet, get a toe, hold it so that your partner can trim - with this you simply wrap, grab a toe and trim. This isn't a gimmick it's a useful tool for birds that freak at the vets. Many avain vets ordered these and use them. I was going to order a set for my vet, but at the time they were $65.00 each, too much for me!

I watched the vid for the straight jacket thingy...it shows traditional toweling vs this thing...it was more traumatic to see how they were holding the parrots....I have never held them like that before!  They say it is safe though, it just looks scary.
I think it looks kind of cool vs toweling for trimming nails, beak.  Not to be used for restraining the bird in general or behavior.  And no I never knew they had them!  They would be easy to make though.

you know what????  :bruce: LOL

I made fun of those snuggies til I GOT one.  . I cracked up when someone mentioned me defending my snuggie! LOL!  :dmblaf:

being able to keep the shoulders covered and neck covered and still use the hands for sewing or eating or reading a bedtime story with a child whilst sitting under drafty living room windows and a malfunctioning (again) furnace? PRICELESS. I tell you, that thing is awesome, and I heard someone else say "they make fun of them til they get one" oh it is sooo true. the pet snuggies are dumb IMHO, it is a jacket,a dn they work the same way..but this is really good when any body part you peek out becomes frozen! I could SLEEP under that thing I swear... I actually DID fall asleep under it while watching TV with hubby last week.. when I stand up in it, there is so much extra material that hubby cracked up and said "it looks like you are going to cast a spell" because it was all big flowing sleeves and wizardly-robish, LOL.. I admit I feel silly in the darn thing, but one thin i am not is COLD! LOL!  :peace: it was 61 degrees in this house last night. brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

as for the bird "straitjacket" , I guess it is good for when you have a bigger bird/wilder bird or something for vet purposes..Julian wriggled out of his towel more than once during our 3x a day totion ritual or bandage changes..I pinned him between my knees on a few occasions.. if he had been a bigger bird I would have been in for it! It would have been nice to have a second pair of hands, but hubby was afraid of crushing him and the kids are just too young and inexperienced to be gentle and firm at once.

Sondra- Imagine that scenario???  umm YES *Di looks at 6 inch bruise still on forearm* :dmblaf:

My daughter wanted a snuggie for xmas I kept teasing her saying you already have one, put your bathrobe on backwards.  Ooh she got mad! :hardlaf:

Yep she got one. :wink1:

my kids wanted snuggies too! my son: "its genius! a blanket with sleeves!!" they got them too! they LOVE THEM! it isn't exactly the same as a robe on backwards (i put my snuggie on abckwards out of curiousity LOL) but it is a similar concept.  :thumb:

The way they hold the birds in the video is similar to how my vet will hold bitey birds. They can't bite someone that way and tend to relax somewhat (I stress the somewhat). The hold looks uncomfortable but isn't, I've actually grabbed Powder in a similar hold when he was going through a real bad phase of biting.
