Title: E-Mail I got....
Post by: chance on July 31, 2010, 07:43:17 am
I JUST GOT THIS E-MAIL,,,, PLEASE TELL ME WHY IT'S PISSING ME OFF  :pipen: :mad1: :thinkin3: :pit: :slaph:

I am very interested in your birds. I just started my aviary and am trying to find a mate for my birds. I have: a ring necked dove, a pied lovebird, a sun conure, a latino cockatiel, a Quaker, finch, a pied parrotlet, a senegal and I just rescued an african grey from abuse. I still rescue, as part of my aviary. I have a top of the line incubator brand new and need to find some eggs. If you have mates for my babies, then lets work something out. I use paypal... Thanx

apparently they didnt read anything on your site. just looked at the pictures.
i was reading it last nite. i clicked on the braveheart link and went to bed crying.
anyway, they just dont get the fact the we are saying DONT BREED  i say you cut and paste the letter from the breeder and just e-mail that to them. maybe they'll at least get a little bit of a clue.

Reads a little oddly, doesn't it - spam-like.  :bruce:

I don't like that "one of each thing".  Sigh.

I'm afraid to ask... what was your reply?

My response,

I am appalled that you would contact a rescue of all places , trying to get birds to add to your " breeding stock"  It is thanks to you careless breeders, that rescues are over flowing with unwanted birds, and then for you to say you "rescued" a African grey and have now added him to your "breeding stock" makes me want to vomit !

Her response....

I do not see a problem with un-wanted birds , I make money from selling babies, This is how I pay my bills. I will look else where to get more birds.I was more then happy to pay for what ever birds I adopted.

Hello....it is not about the money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  And yes there is a problem with unwanted parrots, dogs, cats.......yeah you make the money from selling and in turn too many end up unwanted thus again and again....or abused and neglected.

<sigh, shakes head sadly> you just cant change people who dont want to change. if they dont want to see the problem, they wont see it.
i was talking to a girl at work today. she was talking about wanting an african grey. she said "i talked to a place that has rescues and they wanted $2000 for the grey. i said i could get one from a breeder if i wanted to pay that much for one!"  #1 the fact that a 'rescue' was charging $2000 for a grey kinda sent up a red flag to me. #2 and most important: i just couldnt get through her head that getting them from a rescue is not to save money, its to give a homeless bird a forever home. and not to contribute to the breeder's money. if they dont sell their birds, they will quit breeding cause they wont be able to afford to keep doing it without the constant income to "pay their bills".  she just didnt get it. i'm not surprised. she got a oak snake from her back yard, threw it in a tank with a shamwow and some dirt from the back yard. and calls it her 'pet'. no heat source. no full spectrum lighting. she is pretty much the norm around here. people just think of pets as a disposable form of entertainment, dogs, cats, birds, rodents, reptiles its all the same. its okay if it dies in a couple years cause they were tired of dealing with it anyway. or they just let it go.
<sigh> sorry, got on a rant. i quit  even trying to talk to the girl at work. i just finished my work near her as quick as i could so i could go do something in another part of the store.

While I out of all people do not condone someone taking wildlife out of the backyard (and it is illegal in many states) I just wanted to clarify the bit about the reptile part. Snakes do not need full spectrum lighting, unlike lizards snakes do not suffer from MBD which is caused by not enough vitamin D, among other things. Actually, many species of snakes do not spend alot of time in the sun, coral snakes and worm snakes are two North American species that are burrowers. And, what species was it? There is no such thing as an oak snake.

sorry. maybe it's a regional term. here's a pic: http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&q=oak+snake&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=univ&ei=YjlXTLClF8L68Aa6yYjfCA&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CCEQsAQwAA

they live mostly in the trees. are greyish in color. pretty docile. very abundant around here. they sell them in the local petstores but the ones there are born in captivity. i know that doesnt make them "tame", it just seems better than just catching a snake from the yard and throwing it in a tank. that is very interesting about the full spectrum lighting. i was told they need it. as for the dirt from out back, i could just see her scooping up a bunch of fire-ants or what ever and throwing it in with the poor snake. and i'm sure, when her boys get tired of snakey, they'll just throw him back out into the woods. i know the gopher turtle (also regional term) is protected here in florida. idk about the snakes.
