Title: Nutri-berries....
Post by: sundayowner on June 30, 2009, 08:35:46 am
Well, I know that we've all tried nutri-berries at one time or another. And, since I have not posted a topic in who-knows-how-long, I decided to get YOUR feedback on these birdy treats.

I read this in the Drs Foster and Smith ad: "Your bird will thrive on the stimulation and beak exercise they provide. In fact, 96% of the berries gets eaten, which means it's not just smart nutrition, it's a smart buy, too!"

Now, is this just a pomp-ed up ad? Or is it the truth? All I know is that Beep didn't eat ANY of his nutri-berries. He just chewed them to bits and picked out the pieces of fruit! What are your experiences with Nutri-berries? Do you like them or not? Do you fids like them? Which varieties do you recommend?

SUNDAYOWNER POSTED A TOPIC! IMAGINE THAT!  8)

I can't buy them because they have peanuts in them :(

I have heard many birdie parents say their birds like them though, if it is a new food, it takes a while for the birds to try/eat them.......like a toddler! your bird chewed them to bits so it got the 'beak excercise' as promised, and like all kids, they picked out the stuff they liked!  how long have you used them?

Everything but the seed hulls get eaten around here--they are favorites!  They're great to put in foraging toys and stuff.

Orrin is the only bird who won't touch them, but he doesn't really like seed much.  :)

When I brought Ernie home, that was the main staple in his diet.  :o Supposedly he would not eat pellets and he was literally living off of them and what small amounts of table food and veggies his old owner offered him. He was sent home to me with a bag of nutriberries and a note that said feed 7-8 per day, no joke. It did not take him long, but I switched him over to pellets and he now gets one or two per day. Wesley, him, and Joey are the only birds that actually eat them, the others either won't touch them or break them into pieces (ahem, Harley) and eat small bits of the whole thing.

Here at my house they have become a treat that is usually stuffed inside foraging toys for the birds that actually like them. To be honest, I don't know what flavor they are, I just now they are in the yellow labeled bin.

I've heard that feeding Nutriberries as the staple of the diet is actually ok for birds. Very expensive though!
My birds LOVE Nutriberries! I'd say that they enjoy the Avi Cakes more though. A little bit will get dropped to the floor, but just the smaller pieces my birds can't eat. I bet Beep would be able to eat the entire thing, though.

i too use both the nutriberries and the avi cakes.  I use them in converting my seed eating birds to pellets.  All of mine prefer the dark green bag of tropical nutriberries which is the papaya, pineapple ones.  Mine get 1-2 a day as a reward for good behavior and a treat.  They ALL go crazy for them.  Even Huey knows what they are.... ironically his first morning here i pulled the bag out and was going to see if he would try them and all of a sudden this bird lit up like it was christmas day!!!!  At some point he obviously knew what these were, b/c he wasted no time in devouring one!!!

A long time ago when I did give them to my guys they seemed to love them.  After some research I feel some of the ingredients are not to my standard and safety.  Nice to see ya start a topic Sunday! O0

ok, that brings me to a new question: what are the best brands out there in regard to safety and quality? how do you find out this information?

Just research the good stuff for Parrots and compare the ingredients to other brands etc..  We make almost all of our Parrots food so I know I am good. The main ingredients in Nutri Berries is peanuts and in my opinion I will not take that chance.  There were a few other ingredients I can't remember off hand.  I am not saying this product is not good or good for your fids but I will not ever give them this. ;)

Basil and Baxter wont touch them but Morghan will, she doesn't always eat the whole berry but at least half of it.
