Title: How does DNA testing work?
Post by: YoshiMike13 on February 28, 2012, 02:21:42 pm
I did not know that your DNA can tell you if you are a male or female? what is the process that the bird has to go through to be DNA tested? thank you!!

*EDIT*** wow! that would have been really bad if anyone saw the typo i made!!

Their sexual organs are on the inside...so Blood work is done by cutting a nail a little shorter and sending it off to a lab.

Others can be more technical with their answers. :smokinjoe:

You can also pluck a feather to send out to be DNA sexed.

Cost is around $30 per bird. Your avian vet can give you more info. With the blood sample, they can also test for a host of diseases that feather sexing doesn't produce.

oh im new here, and am currently birdless :( i was just wondering. thank you thought it is good to know. i actually want to be an avian vet!

They can be sexed as soon as they hatch. One method involves the eggshell, then there is the blood sample, the feather method requires waiting until the baby has feathers.

DO IT! it will help you know what to expect personality wise, hormone wise, and to know if you need to watch for eggbinding! (females need slightly different foods to get what they need)

they take a small sample of blood at the vet or it can be done by overclipping a toenail.. for my bird, he was getting his polyoma shot anyway, so she took a quick sample.

in DNA animals (including humans) either have an XY or XX set of chrmomosomes, XY is male, X is female, they can look under the microscope and see them, cool huh? every CELL in your body has a COMPLETE set of your DNA, so that is why they can get a DNA profile of a criminal from one hair!  :bugeye:  I am a serious science/history geek so I love this stuff.

the DNA test is worth the money and you don't have to put your bird through surgical sexing, which is outdated and can be barbaric.
grab a Bird Talk magazine and in the back they have companies who offer DNA testing, some labs are better than others.

no, every set of DNA has all the blueprints for a new you , lol  YOu have 26 pairs of chromosomes in each strand of DNA.  there is one set of chromosomes that determines gender, and it is either XY or XX.  neat huh?

parrots for dummies is an EXCELLENT book, I wish tehy didn't have those titles becasue it is a lot of info that dummies could not handle.. I guess because they don't have it in latin or vetspeak they consider it dummies?? I dunno, it is an EXCELLENT resourse to cut your teeth on and then use as a reference! you will find yourself giving advice in the pet stores to stumped bird newbies lol!!!

in school w./ your phone?  lol naughty!!! reading or sleeping, why? when you re bored, this is a great cure!
