I went into the kitchen after letting the kids outside before school and found a scene of minor carnage in Julian's cage! I saw blood drops on a perch, then I saw some on his tummy and beak, he lost a whole toenail!!! I don't know how! he was fine 30 minutes ago! (I swear this weekend......!) he was obviously a little upset and I was surprised he let me pick him up because he must be really hurting. he let me touch his foot and I scrambled (calmly-I was proud of myself) to get flour to stop the bleedig...it didn't work, so next the stingy septic powder. it stopped for a minute, but then he tried to groom it and it started again, then I did it with a q tip in the bathroom and he let me hold the qtip firmly to his toe! (if he was a human kid I swear we would be going for an ice cream cone right now). it seemed to slow. then I wrapped him in his blankie and stuck him on my shoulder and there he has remained, preening my hair and sitting still for half an hour :( he was shaking but that stopped. I looked real quick just now and the bleeding has stopped. I have to add 'cleaning crime scene' to my list of things to do today to put my house back together after the flea scare this weekend! I have not (knock on wood, mumble prayer) seen another flea, butif the flea laid eggs we have to kind of wait and see if I missed anything.

I was up at 2 am with a case of the creeps, and I read a little while until it stopped. (I swore every time I felt a hair brush my arm or face it was a flea, it wasn't)

Wishy, just want to offer a few thoughts. First you did well to react calmly. I can't quite tell from the pic but it looks like his whole nail is gone?  If so I have some suggestions. First, he probably still needs to go to the vet for some antibiotics to prevent infection. Second he probably will not grow that nail back. Third, check his cage VERY closely for strings he could have got caught on. It is quite difficult to lose a toe like that unless he got it caught :(. Poor guy. At least he doesn't seem too bothered. And lastly, a caution if you will. Using quik stop on flesh (not nails) does actually burn the flesh. Not in just a pain way but in a chemical way too. It is not recommended. Starch is the best way to go there.  Good for you for getting him all patched up tho. Keep a close eye on him. Sadly I am all too familiar with toe nail wounds after last year.

corn starch! check, got a lot of that! I didn't know what to do besides flour and quick stop. I posted on here ASAP. he lost the whole nail, I can't for the life of me find it. I was trying to keep him quiet and to stop nibbling on it, he fell asleep on my shoulder, I was in heaven.  I was concentrating on keeping him calm and not letting him nibble on his toe.  thank  you for letting me know about quick stop.  there is blood on the bars, perches, floor. not a lot but enough for me... halloween isn't for a while and I alrady have a spooky scene :(

poor little guy!! and YOU wishy...oohh I can so see your sorrow in the picture!!

Watch him for balance issues as well...It may take him a little bit to not be skidish.
If he ends up not being able to perch well- Remember flat perches are available.

Yeah- Septic is really only good for minor bleeds, if I understand it correctly because its painful.

poor baby...... sadbigeye...Your such a Good Parront!! hugu

he keeps pulling the scab off, I called the vet and she said they would so there what i already am doing at home, just with the addition of a bandage..so ladies and gentleman, i bandaged my bird's foot all by myself, only lost 6 feathers in the process (that tape just sticks to EVERYTHING, LOL) and he was an angel, just the sweetest angel. now he has no foot to use, so i made a sling of sorts out of a bandanna so he can nestle right in the crook of my neck and stay warm and secure. I look like a cowgirl. LOL. he has not moved he is just sitting there looking around.

it scabbed over.

You did good gal and great advice BF!  The same happened with Aussie not long ago.  We got the bleeding to stop and then swabbed with non greasy antibiotic ointment.  I always recommend having a birdy first aide kit so you do not have to scramble around for something when you really need it fast.  Good job all.

thanks guys!!!!  hugu

I modified his sleep cage so he could use it, took all perches out:

I lowered his hut with links so he could throw himslef into it, it worked really well :)

breakfast: I put him in a little plastic storage bin and put some little toys in there with his breakfast. he is in there so he won't fall off high perches and hurt himslef. no big cage today.

*pffttt... and she was worried she'd make a lousy fiddy-foo momma,  roll you remember that guys?  optimal job, Squish! Your calm cool and collective already intact mommy instincts kicked in! And a hang out snuggle sling? Brilliant!  You know what you are teaching that little guy? That you are  his "boogaboo squelcher"  No mater what, he can count on you to keep him safe. Aww.. look at that widdle eyeball... cwy What sounds is he making? Do you remember what kinda sounds he made when he first got hurt. Distress calls? "ouchie momma" cries?
