I have conquered wing clip, now I am moving on to nails. I read on another forum that cayenne pepper is a better bleeding stopper than flour. Has anybody heard this? I want to be prepared just in case. I am just going to take the tips off. I read that the vein retracts slightly after every tip cut, so you wait a week and take another tiny bit off every week until done. Sound about right? And please, advise on the cayenne pepper if you know. I like to be prepared for emergencies.

I have never heard about the pepper before, lord knows we own stock in it!
We use the clippers on chico's one nail that is kinda funky and curls way in, or we use a regular nail file.
Curious to the cayenne pepper though...

Yep it does work to stop bleeding, I called my mom to ask if shed ever heard that (she worked in a vet clinic for like 9 years) she said thats what she used the one time she clipped Shana's nail too short and it worked wonders. And yep Jades it does retract with each clipping (to and extent of course).

Well, what a mess. I tried Bella first. First foot, no problemo. Second foot, last nail, she decided to not pull her foot away, but PUSH just as I was snipping. So, we start bleeding. I apply pressure....no luck. I do the pepper thing, slows it down, but it keeps oozing and oozing and oozing.....I have tiny blood spots all over my shirt. I was letting her walk on me to see if it was still oozing. Her nails are black and that was the easiest way to check her status. Sent my son on an emergency pharmacy run for a styptic pencil. It wasn't bad, just oozing a tiny bit, but just didn't want to stop. Finally got it to stop with the styptic. She Was not a happy bird. She was very good about it, but not happy, I let her go to bed, and then went in 1/2 hour later to double check it was still OK.
Well, she is smarter than me. Was in her fuzzy hut and just kept saying "peekaboo", but wouldn't come out. Any other time she is out like  a shot. "Peekaboo, peekaboo, peekaboo"  and  I couldn't pry her out. Finally lured her with a pumpkin seed. She knew what I was up to, and she had had enough of me.  ::)
End of story, she is fine, I am a wreck, and I think Dr. S. will continue to do their nails.  ;D

I have seen those on TV. They look awesome. Could you use it on a bird quaker / conure size fid, or are they too small. It would be well worth the 20 bucks if it would work with them.

Yeah it would work fine for your guys, you have to keep turning & moving it so it does not get hot on their nails.

So I think it sounds like you did fine for the first time, 1 bloody nail...not bad at all don't give up! Next time have some quick stop in the house for that just in case thing  ::)

I did good? Thats the funniest thing I've ever heard. Where do you get quick stop? Pet store or drug store? I need an industrial sized barrel before I would try that again.

Jadez shame on you!  knuppel2.gif Quick stop is something all parrot owners should always have in your home in the birdie first aid kit, not only used to stop bleeding of nails but to be used if any blood feathers get broken.
With all of the birds you have it would be a very good idea to have some on hand for emergencies.
It can be found at pet stores ::) now go shopping!

Sounds like you did great with what happened! even though you're going to return to the vet for future grooming, I think it's good that you tried it once just to see what it's like.  AddEmoticons04239

Is there something in Quick Stop that makes it better than flour? Because in the past all I've used is flour, and it seems to work well. But if Quick Stop is better for some reason, I'll have to go buy some.

Good girl  AddEmoticons04239 hey you dont always have to pull a blood feather when they break, you can put some quick stop on it & pressure and save it...just FYI

Hey where is our resident vet tech *yelling* SOPHIE...which is the preferred method? inquiring minds want to know  ;)

And you are not  crazy2.gif

Sometimes I feel that way. We all can always learn something. Seriously, I appreciate the info. Whatever is best for the nasty feathered pooping and biting machines....oops...I mean my sweet angels!
(Jade has ate so much flesh off of me this week, I think she is reverting to her true dinosaur carnivorous nature. )

Jade it may not have really been as bad as you think.  I did that with Yoshi too and I do them myself now all the time.  I did find out something interesting though AFTER i did it.  Bella just turned 6 mos.  Well I had found out that you should not do a nail on a bird under 6 mos because the quick goes almost to the end and it willl start to retract thereafter.

Now you tell me! LOL Well, she was 6 mo on 10/9. All the other ones went fine, its cause she pushed. She had just been still way too long.
