Hello to everyone from Sunny New Mexico where we have a roudy bunch of spoiled parrots who could make just about anyone fall head over heals!  My name is Anna and my husband, Andy, and I run Macaw & Cockatoo Rescue of NM.  As the name implies we specialize in working with, rehabilitating, and adopting out macaws and cockatoos, though we work with every species of psittacine (great or small) and believe that each individual is unique, valuable, and to be treated with kindness and respect.  This includes the macaw listed below:

http://albuquerque.craigslist.org/pet/1179121079.html

Our rescue is responsible for anywhere between 30-45 parrots at a time and we try our best to make every moment of their stay fun, entertaining, & nurturing.  We work really hard to educate and to find loving new homes where we know our birds will have a greater chance of staying for the rest of their lives.  I love to learn and love challenges so we often take on parrots that others say are untrainable, ones that are sick or who have other physical complications.  We enjoy working with fearful, aggressive, biting, plucking, mutilating, and screaming parrots and have had a lot of success helping them to calm down and discover who they really are and what they enjoy.  There is no reward greater than watching a parrot come out of his shell to realize that life can be pretty fun after all!  We try not to put expectations on our birds - they will be who they will be, and we care for them no matter what that means.

Among our flock which is often changing, we have some birds that will always be here for a varying reasons.  Among these is my love of life, Blue & gold macaw Peggy Sue who is gentle and sweet and friendly to anyone who meets her.  We also have a high spirited and typically silly Triton cockatoo named Bat Too, a soft hearted bared eyed cockatoo named Benny Boy, a 45 yr old DYHA named Loretta, Orangewing amazon PJ, Red Lory Orbit, IRN Chrissy and some cockatiels.  Each of our guys brings enrichment to our lives in their own wonderful way and we cannot see life without them.

Our current adoptable fosters include 4 cockatoos: E2 Lacey, U2 TJ, M2 Chloe, & U2 Baby.  We also have 6 macaws: YCM Ziggy, MM Kiko, B&G Sydney, B&G Jessie, MM Popeye, & B&G Markey.  We have 3 congo african greys, all with special needs: Francis (missing both of her feet), Raphael (Severe/chronic sinus infection, Sebastian/"Sabby" also with chronic sinusitis.  We also have some smaller birds: Red Lory Mars, and 7 cockatiels, Bonnie, Buddy, Sunday, Mateo, Turk, Scooter, & Valentine.

Here are some pictures of our rescue, our flock, and some of our fosters.

I'm happy to be here on Buffalo Parrot and will try to come back as often as possible but have lots of obligations locally, with our flock, and with other online forums. Thank you K&T and Zimba's Mom for inviting me here.  I will do my best to contribute what I can to your forum.  If ever anyone needs my help with anything, please just pop me an e-mail and I will do my best to help answer questions or assist in a situation - making jokes whenever possible.  Our rescue really prides itself on netwroking with others who are interested in aviculture and we have successfully been able to assist in helping to better parrots all over the country - either through education or placement.  Thanks a bunch for reading my long winded hello and looking forward to getting to know you all.
-Anna

Welcome to BP. It is very nice to know others who share the same passion. I applaud you. AddEmoticons04239 You have a beautiful place and your birds are very special and very loved. Thankyou for what you do. I look forward to hearing about the upsidedown cage, we too had a grey with no feet so I am curious about the cage and his story. When you have time, can you please share that with us?

Welcome to BP! I think I would steal Popeye in a heartbeat if I could!! Looks like a real sweetie.  ;)  Do you ever find issues with the macaws since they're sensitive to cockatoo dust, or does your air purifier pretty much take care of it all?
I love the idea of turning Francis's cage upside down because of his disibality. Brilliant!

We have a total of 5 high grade HEPA air purifiers floating around to keep our air clean but we also take some other precautions.  I make sure that all of our birds are bathed weekly and try to bath the cockatoos more regularly.  Some macaws are still more prone to allergies from bird dander and though we have never had a problem, sinusitis is something that we keep a close eye out for.  I think as long as areas are well maintained with good airflow, the dander issue between old world and new world species isn't a huge risk.  In the future, I think it would be great to have seperate areas for macaws and cockatoos, but that's going to take a lot of funding. :)

I'm just finding this forum and when I saw Anna with Macaw and Too I thought... hmmm.. I wonder if that is Anna with Chrissy.  I just love Chrissy's talking video's you've shared on other forums.  I don't see you much on TT (tiel).  I bet your busy though.   Hopefully you can stop in again and give some updates.    Nice seeing a familar face here :)
